Hi Vic
Great - well done! (and, as you say, very Spanish!)
Our appointments were made for us by our solicitor, but this is basically what we did (Note - all this has to be started within a month of the date of your arrival in Spain):
Padron
We attended the town hall in Lorca (which covers our area), with an appointment to get on the padron. We had our passports containing our shiny new visas (NLVs) and our deeds to our property. Note - we have photos of our all documents stored in our phones, but they insisted on seeing the original NIEs, which our solicitor hadn't listed as being required - so this necessitated a 1 hour return drive to our property to get the originals (and much stress on my behalf!). In my opinion - take everything you have!
There was a bit of confusion, as, firstly, we live out in the countryside and don't have a standard address; and then the town hall lady (who was very helpful) found that the previous residents at our property had not removed themselves from the padron, so they had to be removed before we could be added. We were then given padron certificates for use in the residency process and also for buying a car (because we asked). In what we found strange, at the end of the process, we had to pay a small amount into what I can only describe as a ticket machine on the wall, which prints a ticket that the town hall attached to their copies of the padron certificates, to show that you've paid for them. They were something like €4.60 each - so take plenty of loose change!
TIE
About a week later, we had our TIE appointment, which was at the Foreigner's Office in a Police Station in Lorca. In advance, we had been given a form each to complete and then pay (for the TIE appointment). Again, strangely to us, we had to take the forms to a branch of our bank (no other bank could do this) and pay a small amount (I forget, but maybe €12) and then the bank stamped the forms as paid. We then took this form, along with our padron certificates, passports, NLV, two passport sized photos and NIE - to the police station at our appointed time. There we handed over the documents (the Police officers didn't speak much English, but the Lorca is a not a tourist area) and had the fingerprint of our right index-fingers scanned. We were then issued with a receipt, with a number on it and told to look on a particular website in about 40 days time, where we could check if the batch of numbers including ours had been completed. We could then make an appointment via this website to go back to the Police station and collect our TIEs. At this appointment, we had to show our passports and also have our fingerprint scanned (to check who we were) and then we were issued with our credit card sized TIEs.
Hope this helps and happy to answer any more questions...
