Today's news: Two brothers are furious after they kicked squatters out of their £170,000 flat but were later arrested by police who helped the trespassers move back in. Siarhei and Aleh Pakrouski, aged 29 and 35, originally from Belarus , now face jail for 'defending their property' in the El Raval neighbourhood, Barcelona.

The police were quite brutal when the two owners were arrested. Things have been stolen from their property and it could take a year and more for this to go to court.

Spanish law

Needs to change to help protect the home owners a lot more. Is there not some way, a petition or something that could be organised, or does Spanish law now work like this?

Spanish law has always been this way, that is why people are advised to have good security i their property is left unattended for long periods.

Under current Spanish law, the express eviction of occupants from their occupied housing by the police is possible only within 48 hours of their invasion. After that period, it is possible to evict the invaders only through the courts.

That’s as maybe, but no matter how good your security, if they are that determined to gain entry, they will. Hence my comment about Spanish law needs to change.

So are you suggesting that every law regarding squatters throughout the world should be changed?

Why should Spain change the law?

I certainly think squatter laws in any country - not just Spain. should be changed in favour of the true owners right to deter these  freeloading entitled parasites, within the law of course.

Eduardo, from your tone, it sounds like you are okay with people breaking in to your property, taking possession of it and costing you thousands to get the problem sorted. Not sure why that would be but I hope this never happens to you. Well, almost hope.

Why do countries favor people carrying guns and knives?

As I understand it, Spaniards have a right to accommodation, and if it is in the house of a non-Spaniard, then the police are happy with that.
