Eduardo, from your tone, it sounds like you are okay with people breaking in to your property, taking possession of it and costing you thousands to get the problem sorted. Not sure why that would be but I hope this never happens to you. Well, almost hope.

As I have said if you have proper security you should have no problems, unfortunately people that don't live here permanently can no longer legally stay the amount of time they used to and still expect everything to be safe with just grills on windows and doors, but forget about all the goodies left about attracting interest from criminals

As I understand it, Spaniards have a right to accommodation, and if it is in the house of a non-Spaniard, then the police are happy with that.

Squatters do not care whose house it is  they will obviously go where ever entry is easy. Nationality does not come into it.

Why do countries favor people carrying guns and knives?

You are now confusing squatting with burglary. Squatters are not so interested in the contents that are in the property. Why is it that if squatters break into a property the Spanish police can’ charge tgem with breaking and entering as they would in the U.K.

I am confusing nothing Squatters will be attracted to any property especially ones that have quality and valuable items on show I.e. washing machines and outside barbeques.. Also if you read the original post and newspaper article you will note the content relates to theft

"Things have been stolen from their property and it could take a year and more for this to go to court"

Also if you are friendly with your neighbours they should inform you and the police of any unusual activity relating to ypur property

Eduardo - not many countries to my knowledge do favour gun and knife carrying routinely - except the USA and we all know where that has led them.  Maybe it was necessary in the days of the wild west , but they should have moved on since then.

I certainly think squatter laws in any country - not just Spain. should be changed in favour of the true owners right to deter these  freeloading entitled parasites, within the law of course.

I couldn't agree more - I think in any EU country the current law in Spain is highly questionable.

It is not unreasonable of any property owner to expect the laws of the country to protect the rightful owners and indeed I find it more than objectionable to find the rights of squatters take precedent over owner's rights.

It is incomprehensible to me to find the laws of any country favours lawbreakers over lawful citizen's rights. It's time the EI stepped in to protect homeowners in Spain. This law is anathema to any right thinking people. Facilitating illegal activity, ie breaking and entering, is beyond comprehension particularly when it is a well known fact that many of these squatters are highly organised mafia operators not averse to using extreme violence and often blackmailing the legitimate owners.

Remember the utilities are still in the name of the owners and it is they who must pay for them regardless of the fact that they no longer have access to their property  & Spanish law offers no protection to owners in such circumstances.

To think this is permitted by law in a civilised country says a lot about the legislators of Spain. Can't understand why Spanish citizens don't find this law as objectionable as others do since their own property is as subject to it as non Spanish owners.

I think it's apathy on behalf of most of the general public, - they just never think about it happening to them  - UNTIL IT DOES.

What happened to the saying An Englishman's or any other persons  home is his castle".

Individuals have the right to use reasonable force, including deadly force, to protect themselves against an intruder in their home.
