My wife and I are looking to move to Camposol by the end of the year, and I am wondering what sort of business to start, I am a mining Engineer by trade, but I have worked in the building industry also, so I was wondering, what services do people need, are the builders reliable for you, or is there some other service people need, my wife is a qualified family therapist, with over 25 years experience in the NHS and with the police force, she is also qualified in massage therapy, Reiki, among other things, we were also thinking of something for the younger generation, as there are very limited things to do for kids/teenagers. any suggestions welcome.

Starting a legal business here is not easy, you need a licence for everything & being self employed here can cost you more than you make. You need to do more research than asking on forums for ideas. There are countless builders & lots of salons offer all the therapies going. No there isn’t much for teenagers to do here but there aren’t that many teenagers living here - Camposol residents are mostly retirement age & the younger age groups are mainly only here in peak holiday times. Several people have tried to start new businesses here recently - even starting work on premises but the local authority have not granted the required licenses. Not wishing to be a doom & gloom merchant but these are the facts.

Hi Cat47, I am aware of the public transport situation, and I understand it is very difficult to obtain a licence/permit for a taxi/minibus etc, but I will look into it, thanks for your reply.

You’re welcome. The local authority make it very difficult for entrepreneurs here I’m afraid & the people that do have businesses work very hard & do not welcome competition. I think it’s a lot easier in other parts of Spain. Yes a Taxi service is desperately needed on Camposol but the start up costs are apparently stupendous & a licence wouldn’t be granted. Sorry I haven’t got any positive information for you.

Nothing like a bit of healthy competition, as I said, all information is welcome, then I know what to expect.

Yes if it is healthy - I know of a few people who have not been able to start/continue trading because other existing businesses have complained to the local authority who have then not issued a licence etc.

Hi Stuart47,

There is a wealth of advice for you bang up to date on the ukgov website living and working in Spain.

Also visit the Citizens Advice Website in Spain.  The website tells you everything you need to know.

Working in Spain self employed is costly before you earn any money, appx 280€ per month each and it has to be paid every month regardless. Spaniards dare not miss a payment.

Its not linked to income either if you don't earn one month it still has to be paid.

To start up a business is a minefield of legalities, taxes and costs. You would need proper legal advice before venturing.

Operating a Taxi service? To get a licence you need fluency in Spanish without an interpretor and it costs 12,000€ per year for the licence before you earn a cent.

The penalties for illegal operation can mean excessive fines, confiscation of vehicle and jail time.

There have been instances of illegal cabbies being beaten up at the airports and their vehicles trashed. The Police usually turn a blind eye because the cabbie community is huge and powerful and very protective of their own licenced cabbies. They do not welcome expats encroaching  on their livelihood.

A friend of mine who operated a casual airport run for his neighbours did not reslize that all vehicles are videoed entering the airport with NPR recognition. Apparantly thee or four times per month will result in prosecution with horrific fines. He got set about at Alicante Airport and fled back to the UK. Six years later he decided to come back on the last Friday evening flight.

He was duly arrested appeared in Court the next day and fined 18k. He now resides in a one bedroom council flat in the UK.

No its not easy, but not impossible to work here in Spain but you need to do a lot of research, preferably on the sites I have mentioned.

All of the above is why it is difficult to find any young families living out here only retirees.

Good luck, regards Al

Cheers Al, that's a really big help, and an eye opener.
