Similarly to the UK, the electricity retail / supply market has been suppressed for the last 2 years, with capped prices, government support and a reduction in IVA (VAT in Spain).

This is now ending (for example, IVA is returning to 21% this month, having been reduced to 10% since early-2022); and suppliers are back competing for customers.

That said, prices (in € per kWh) are very similar, although certain suppliers will offer a discount for the first 3 or 6 months, for example, before the prices return to the standard tariff; and some are offering a price guarantee for up to 5 years!

I am with Iberdrola and pay €0.146 per kWh on their Stable Plan for my consumption.

There are two elements of Standing Charge - I pay literally less than €1 per month for meter rental, but then the customer needs to pay for 'potencia', which is calculated against the maximum draw of power you can take from the supply. Common values for this are 3.3kW, 5.75kW and 9.2kW. This will be shown on your bill. This is then multiplied by the number of days in the billing period and then the tariff, which in my case is €0.087 for peak and €0.003 for off-peak. As I have a potencia of 9.2kW, my usual potencia charge is €27 per month.

Hope this helps!

You do understand that the potencia is charged all year round, not just when you are using the property?

and you cannot just get it disconnected when you are not here as it is expensive to reconnect and may take weeks to happen?

Of course IBI, water and rubbish collection charges etc also are year-round.

I’m with Iberdrola and my potencia of 5.75 kw was set up by my solicitor when I purchased the apartment

It’s a holiday home and averages between €20/25 when not there.

Am only a new owner and don’t understand the potencies and would like to switch to a lower KW or supplier but not sure if the place would trip  if I had too many things on at the same time.

If you changed to 3.3kW potencia then you would save about €10 per month, but you would be unlikely to be able to boil a kettle while using the oven, for example. Below are the common wattages of appliances, but obviously they do vary...

Electric shower (9 kW)

Immersion heater (3 kW)

Kettle (3 kW)

Tumble Dryer (2.5 kW)

Electric heater (2.5 kW)

Oven (2.1 kW)

Washing machine (2 kW)

Hairdryer (2 kW)

Hob (2 kW)

Grill (1.5 kW)

Iron (1.5 kW)

Toaster (1 kW)

Microwave (1 kW)

Vacuum cleaner (0.9 kW)

Plasma TV  (0.4 kW)

Fridge-freezer (0.4 kW)

Thanks for that.  Had a feeling the 3.3kw may be too low.

There is a site that compares electric companies/rates but can’t remember the name. Maybe someone here can remember and see if it’s worth chang
