Hi all, can anyone help , we have just bought in Santiago de la ribera in a apartment block and the electric needs rewiring,  on inspection of the main DB there is no supplied earth. How do we get a earth to the board, do we contact our electric supplier to sort this or can a electrician do this?

It is not the supplier's responsibility. The Distribution company, probably IDE, which is the distribution arm of Iberdrola, will deal with anything up to the main fuse, but anything on the 'property side' of the main fuse would need a fully-qualified electrician to deal with.

It may also be worth asking some neighbours about their supply, as I recall there being older Spanish wiring systems that didn't use earthing in the same way as we do in the UK (e.g. Spanish plugs are 2-pin, with no earth).

Hope this helps!

In my experience, the spring clips either side of the two pin plugs, ARE the earth connection.

Yes that is true I believe.

Although many small appliances these days don't need an earth.

Hi we bought in Lo Pagan, exactly the same issue! We did had to have a total rewire from the meter box to the apartment and throughout. With an upgrade to 4.75Kw. This then needs to be signed off with a Bulletin which is valid for 20 years. Clearly this all needs to be done by a qualified electrician.  All the works ( part of a total refurb) cost around 3K euros. But you can't put a price on safety plus we wanted to boil a kettle whilst the dishwasher is on and watch a movie - without it going very dark........
