We are coming over to San Javier Murcia in October also. We would need to hire a car for 2 weeks. Could you give us a few car hire company names that are reliable. Man thanks in advance

Hi.

We use DoYouSpain which is excellent for collection at both Alicante and Murcia airports.

We find the best option (so you don’t get stung with additional costs at the rental desk) are book the car on a ‘full to full’ basis for fuel and with unlimited mileage.

As previous posts have said, buy your own excess insurance policy before you come out otherwise you’ll pay €22 per day for it with the rental company.

We’ve used various companies but have found Firefly to be the best.

Hope this helps.

Steve

I hire a lot of cars from Alicante and a few from San Javier and I have never had more than 800€ blocked on my card for having my own excess insurance. Don't worry about full/full or full/ empty. I've booked both and now always return the car full and I've never been charged for fuel. The only downside with full/empty is the refueling charge which you will have to pay anyway.

Car hire firms vary dramatically in Spain and I've found that it's usually the personnel at the same company that can be either fantastic or obstructive!

If you read the threads on here you will find the bad ones!

We tend to go through carrentals.co.uk and look for the best deal from a company we’ve at least heard of.

Rental from Murcia airport is generally more expensive than from Alicante but our most recent rental was €6.99 for 5 days. We have our own excess insurance so we’ll just pay for an extra driver on arrival (think that’s €41 for the 5 days) and they’ll block off €1600 from a credit card...

... and we’re away.

Whatever you do, don’t ever hire from a company called Dickman’s. Not sure if they operate out of SanJavier but they apparently still do at Alicante. Total ripoff merchants. Thousands of bad reviews!

Hi they do do rentals from San Javier airport and have used Dickmans several times, we had 3 weeks car hire for approx £73.00 paid for full tank of petrol took back full and got a full refund. They do block your credit for €1000 but you have to have a good look round the car and make sure any damage is marked on the rental agreement. Take out you own insurance before yo go.

If you take out excess cover (Car Hire Excess Insurance) in the UK (an annual one is better value if you hire two or three times a year) then there's no need to take out the extra insurance they try to foist on you at the rental desk. Bear in mind, though, that even with the excess cover, you wil...

...l still have to pay the rental company any costs incurred in Spain if you have an accident or damage the car in any way, but you then claim the costs back from the excess insurance policy once you're back in the UK.

I never pay any extra when picking up the car (unless it's for an extra driver - some companies won't take the money for that upfront, you have to pay it on arrival). The car we're picking up next week for 5 days has cost us the princely sum of €6.99. We already have the excess insurance (I can't remember how much it was) so when we get the car, the only thing we'll do is give them a credit card so they can block off the €1600-odd they always insist on in case you don't bring the car back!! But that isn't an actual charge - it's a guarantee.

The car is insured in sain not the driver, so why do you have to pay for extra driver?
