In the context of looking towards being in Spain with a non lucrative visa and in receipt of pensions, have looked at the personal allowances in Spain ...... eek

Actually I think I must have read old information. From something else I’ve just read, the allowances are very similar to ours. It’s mind boggling.

This page looks about right for Spain

https://www.myspanishresidency.com/taxes-spain/#:~:text=The%20general%20personal%20allowance%20for,2%2C400%20for%20the%20first%20child

This is the UK

In general, tax is paid at a higher rate in Spain, with lower allowances.

My wife and I pay (between us) around 70% more tax in Spain than in the UK.

In addition, there is a delay between the date on which you become liable for income tax in Spain and the date you get out from the UK system. For a period of time, you will pay tax in both countries in parallel. This is a cash flow pinch-point. We await refund of our UK tax back to 1/1/19.

My advice is to get a professional tax assessment before parting with lots of money on the visa process.

IMHO everything except council tax (IBI) is more expensive in Spain than the UK.

I totally agree with you Peter, sick of people going on about how much cheaper everything is. I returned to Uk (non resident) my fruit and veg shopping was cheaper than the local shops, even the market not so much cheaper and potatoes half the price in Uk. Funny how people talk about the high cost of council tax in UK but then pay as much or even more in private health insurance?

Regards

You are right Pauline. Maybe we are naive but our health insurance is €200 per month with DKV to gain residency. Electric and water is dearer. We’ve been here just over a year and so far it’s definitely not cheaper.
