Anybody had any experience of using a TransferWise borderless account to pay monthly direct debits for their Spanish utility bills ??

I am thinking of closing my Spanish bank account

Roland, after 10yrs of non resident charges with Sabadell, I spent 3wks researching all spanish banks for a free non resident account. In April I changed to Cajamar bank. Have to set up in branch as doesnt accept a non res Nie online. Since then no charges and I,m very happy with their services. Only charge i,ve paid is 3€ for a duplicate debit card as i,d left my purse at home in UK . Their app was only in spanish but now available in english. They dont always have anyone english speaking but with google translate and questions I had input translated before my branch visit we got there. Cant recommend them enough, do it you wont regret it

Regards

Pauline.

Ps. Dont close Sabadell until all dir debits have transferred to Cajamar and take your direct debit info with you when you open account.

Hi, I was able to include Resortalia,Iberdrola and the water company iban account numbers to my Moneycorp account and can now pay my bills direct from Moneycorp who give good exchange rate and because I use them frequently get free transfers so no need for Spanish account which I agree are ridiculously expensive. Still kept my Bankia account open but only use it with my debit card when in spain.

Hi Roland

How did you get on with TransferWise and direct debits? I asked my solicitor to transfer them for me but they didn’t want to do it. I’ve no idea how to transfer my Spanish taxes etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

My solicitor did it for me no problem.

They do have Power Of Attorney though.

You could probably do it yourself or perhaps pay somebody a few euro to ring them up for you if you a not up to doing it ??

I’m not confident enough (or quick enough to speak Spanish over the phone). can I just check with you please If you have been able to transfer everything and it is all ok? Have you closed your Spanish bank account?  When I spoke to my solicitors today they said they hadn’t heard of TransferWise and it was too late to do it because our taxes are due in August. they said it’s not something they were prepared to do.
I think I will speak to some people when we visit Spain again and find out if anyone could do it for us.
the reason we want to close our bank account, apart from the ever increasing charges, is because they are so rude and unhelpful. We have been with them 14 years and always try to be so polite and speak Spanish but they never want to help us.

Ok so if your solicitors do not want to use TransferWise open a Cajamar Wefferent Spanish bank account.

This account is well documented on this forum.

It is an online only account & has a debit card.

As a non resident you can only open the account in a bank branch.

If you use the account online only there are no charges at all.

I think your solicitors are being a bit naughty & are probably protecting their own national interests by refusing to use TransferWise.

I decided to keep a Spanish bank account just to keep my options open for the future.

I only keep a few hundred euro in each account though.

I closed my Bankia bank account in January as their charges went sky high.

How would I transfer over the direct debits ? Would the bank do this for me if I go into a branch to open an account ?

I would have thought they would do that for you.

Obviously don't close your old account before you open the new one.
