Anybody had any experience of using a TransferWise borderless account to pay monthly direct debits for their Spanish utility bills ??

I am thinking of closing my Spanish bank account

We use transfer wise ..to transfer money from our UK bank in to our Spanish bank account ..to pay the standing orders we have set up ...I think you will find you will still need a Spanish bank account to pay your standing orders and so forth..

TransferWise website says that you can pay your Spanish direct debits (NOT standing orders they are different things ) using the borderless account.

They give you an IBAN account number that starts with BE which is a Belgian code.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing Roland so keen to see what replies you get. I've also got a Starling bank account which allows you to have a UK and EU account. I was looking to see if they pay Spanish direct debits

I think the reason you want to close your Spanish bank account ...is to avoid paying maintenance charges...some banks do offer free Banking when you have a regular amount of money going in on a monthly basis... Transfer wise is not free Banking every time you want to transfer money in or out you will be charged a fee / handling charge .. depending on the amount of the transactions..if they didn't do this they would not stay on business to long... personally I think you should keep your Spanish account as I have yet to find a Spanish cash machine that will accept my UK bank cards without charging a extortionate fee for the withdrawal.

If you read his original post properly he is looking at using transferwise to pay standing orders not to transfer money from the UK to Spain.

I am looking at using Transferwise to pay utility bill DIRECT DEBITS NOT STANDING ORDERS.

Standing orders are completely different things.

I am getting well fed up with the Spanish banking system after 16 years of of playing their 'charge you for everything' game.

I don't have a large amount of euro's a month ( in any form, pension or otherwise ) to pay in to get free banking, I don't want to take the bank's insurance, I don't want to finance a car & I am not under 26 years old.

So no free banking for me.

So that is why I am looking at people like Transferwise, Revolut, Starling & others to pay my utility bill direct debits.

I am going to check with Transferwise tomorrow by phone or online chat.

As far as I can see all that I need to do I need to do is change my bank details online for my utility companies.

I just change my Spanish bank account IBAN code & account number to my Borderless euro account IBAN code & number.
