my partner and I booked to arrive into Bilbao from Ireland on 1st april with car, trailer and 2 dogs. Plan to drive to Camposol to stay in our Villa for a few months. Just read that as its Easter, there are new travel restrictions in place. Trying to find out if we will have problems driving down...

...- does anyone know about these restrictions and how they would affect a journey like this. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jeanniemac

The issue you may have is that aside from Madrid, all Spanish 'municipalities' have closed their municipal borders, therefore people not supposed to cross into another municipality without 'good reason'. (this is not a new restriction by the way)

Having said that, by all reports, Mazarron was full of vehicles registered in Madrid, Belgium, France, etc. last week, so not sure how strictly this is being policed.

Drove from Bilbao port to Torre Pacheco 3 weeks ago with no problem. Never even saw a police vehicle.

Under the relevant laws you can transit through each region to reach your destination. That's set out in the Royal Decrees & individual regional Decrees, so no problem driving through regions to reach your place.

Hello I don’t want to scupper your plans but it’s my understanding that all non essential travel is to be avoided. The Spanish law stipulates that you must have a valid reason for travel. Please be aware that although your ferry tickets have been issued this does not guarantee travel. The law is set to be changed on 31st May so things might change. We’ve recently returned from Spain and I can say first hand that restrictions are still in place. When we arrived in Spain many of the local towns and municipalities had police check points. The current picture is quite mixed as many places in Spain currently have lots of local restrictions. You also need to consider a few other things. 1 what will be your contingency if the ferry does not go. This does actually happen quite frequently. It happened to us and we had to drive through France who also have strict guidelines. 2. Will your current government uphold your healthcare during Covid. With all this in mind I’d seek professional help either from your own or Spain’s government. Mark.

Hi have you consider the fact that visiting your holiday home is not a good reason to travel.

People are confined to their regions an cannot visit their holiday  for instance they lived in Murcia and wanted to go to Malaga then this is not allowed.

So maybe if you do get stopped and the police wish to uphold the law you could be heavily fined.

I understand this. We are travelling to stay a few months and not move around once we get there.

Nobody can answer that question. Regulations are being reviewed all the time and although a date maybe given, there is no guarantee that it won't be extended again and again.

If you insist on coming, I suggest you check if the ferry has availability for the return leg as I'm sure you won't want to spend possible time in isolation.

At Bilbao, they not only have the passport control check open, but then you drive a bit further to the Customs check point. With us it was not too bad as we were returning residents but they were "all over" the documentation for the pets and were asking lots of questions in addition to that stated on the paperwork. We had our forms duplicated into Spanish to assist.

You are also hauling a trailer so expect a complete check.

From arrival port to the point we could drive away took 2 hours.
