we did it a few days ago we came via the tunnel because we brought our dog and was the best journey for her.  We drove from Calais to just outside Dijon... from there to Montpellier ...and onto Terragonna.. we intended to stay there as lady stop but the streets were far too  narrow for our car so we drive another 4.5 hours to or destination on el valle... safe trip and enjoy... beware of the lorries that indicate and pull out regardless

Get down through France mate, take your time and enjoy the scenery, head for perpignon and cross into Spain there, just be aware of the traffic as you pass Barcelona, they drive like nutters but you will be fine, just keep your wits about you.  The ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao is ok, but it is SUPER BORING, i had lost the will to live by the time it docked in Bilbao, i'd give that a swerve if I were you.(bloody expensive as well).  I cant remember how far Leeds To Camposol was, but we took 3 days and we enjoyed every minute. Just be aware the tolls can mount up, unless you are in a rush, as someone else has already said, set the nav for no tolls. If you go in the springtime, the scenery in france and northern Spain will be stunning. Have a good trip.

Hi, Hired a long wheel base transit van, loaded it to the roof and set off to Folkestone for the Channel tunnel, kept driving until tired and ended up sleeping in the van for a few hours just south of the Pyrenees ( a great sweeping drive up and down, left and right bends - just like a roller coaster, went over the Mountains about 22.00 hours so little traffic). 11 hours drive plus an hour for stops on day 1

Next day, After breakfast at the Services cracked on for another 9 hours (8 in Spain) to Murcia

A great experience overall, just didn't plan to well to miss the Toll roads but an easy and pleasant drive.

Looked forward to the return journey too. The worst bit of each journey was going around and through Paris but that broke up the Motorways and added some different sights.

We would do it again but in a more comfortable vehicle

Ferry to Santander (or Bilbao) then drive down. Spend a night in a cheap & cheerful hotel en route to break up the journey. It can be done without using toll roads. Fuel in France is mega expensive and its a lonnnnnnnnng drive. We've done both and the ferry is a no brainer.
