HI

We have a EDESA water heater in our Fourtuna on Camposol model TRE-50 N1 50 L capacity. We are thinking of replacing it with a gas heater.we have been quoted 490 plus 100 euros to weather proof it, thats a lot of electricity for that amount, but we realise the benefits it brings.

Does anyone no how much these electric heaters cost to run per hour, compared with a gas heater. The water heater works ok but needs to be on for 2 hours just so both of us can shower, we were thinking of leaving it on daily any thoughts on this.

Cheers

Hi. Whilst I am unable to give you a figure on the cost of running an electric water heater, electric is expensive here and slow to heat up as they are low wattage because the power supply to properties is low. Modern gas water heaters only burn gas  when demanded, no pilot light is burning when not in use and an added advantage is you have instant and unlimited hot water. As a word of advice if you do decide to change go for a 14 litre a minute it gives a good flow of hot water,

Gas can also be expensive.

If the electric water heater is left turned on  it only draws power when bringing the water back to temperature, The bulk of any cost is bringing 20 ltrs or more of water from cold to hot.

You can work out how much an hour it costs to run the heater.

Have a look on the rating plate on the heater or in the instruction book.

Look for the wattage, it will probably be 1kw or 1.5kw or 2 kw.

Multiply the kw of the heater by the cost per kwh on your electric bill.

Make sure you include the standing charge & IVA in your cost per hour as this is a major part of the cost of your electric.

That will give you the cost per hour of the water heater.

P.S

Just checked online & your heater is a 1.2kw model

Depending on how old the heater is and how much use it has had, slow heating could be the result of calcium build up. It doesn't take much to impair the efficiency, so a good clean could be the answer. Mine is quite slow to heat due to calcium, unfortunately the water is very hard.

Just an added thought, have you already got or considered "day and night" tarif electric? I changed from standard to this tarif some years ago and what a big differrence it made. I get 14hrs, from 11pm to 12noon in winter or 12midnight to 1pm in summer cheap, ie approx 6c kw.instead of 15c. I put water heater on for 1-2hrs in morning which is sufficient for 2 showers and washing up. Do washing, dishwashing,  vacuuming etc anything electrically heavy loaded incl. cooking ready for evening meal in the morning hrs(sit in sun after that!)lol. Tv,s used in evenings not so heavy on electric so if you do it right you will save on the cost and I,ve found my water tank is heated within 2hrs as after that it just comes on to maintain temp only but I switch it off before the low price period ends and never switch on too early when water is at its coldest.(set 2hrs approx before end of low price). If you use electric radiators in winter you can set an hour before waking to take chill off too in morning. It becomes a habit to utilise electric during cheap rate. I also use a magnetic coil around my water inlet which is supposed to stop the build up of calcium deposits too.I dont know if this is helpful to you, it was just a thought.

Pauline.

Do you have to have a separate meter for day and night? and what is the charge for that?

Just the 1 meter and there,s no charge to change tarif, you can do it online. I got times wrong earlier, 10pm-12noon and 11pm to 1pm in summer.

Pauline.
