So at last our move to Camposol is imminent, (October) we have found a buyer for our house here in uk and have secured a furnished rented property for 6 months on sector B and once we’re there will look around to buy a villa.

I’m in a dilemma about what we should bring, is it worth keeping all our furniture and paying for removals and paying for it to be stored in Spain? Or would we be better off selling it all here and replacing it all when we’ve bought our property there.

Do we bring our English car and then buy a Spanish one when we arrive or is it better to buy a LHD Spanish reg one here in uk to travel over in. ( we have a dog so need to come over by car)

Any tips and advise would be gratefully received.

Can only speak from our own experience last year. We hired a man and a van to ship most of our possessions with the exception of most of our furniture, that would have required a bigger, more expensive van. We used it as an opportunity to replace some of our older furniture and white goods. We know others hate the place but we like it and bought from Ikea in Murcia, they deliver to Camposol, many deliveries since with no problems. As for car we loaded our UK sportage  up to the gunwhales with the rest of our stuff and 2 cats and took the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, 8/9 hours of driving to Camposol. Our choice was to buy over here as Lhd makes much more sense and being a Spanish car all the paperwork was in place. Paul at carsinspain had a good choice and took ours in px, less than we would have got in the UK but the difference was less than the cost of taking it to the UK and then having to get back home to Camposol by plane/taxi etc.

However you end up getting here hope you enjoy it, we certainly are, best move ever, even if it is too hot 🌞🌞🌞🌞 (not really, loving the warmth)

It depends very much on the value/age/cost cost of your furniture, any emotional attachment to it, style & size (will it fit with the size / type of property you intend to buy?), etc. versus replacement costs. If you have furniture that has seen better days and you expect to replace in the next few years anyway, or a 5 year old plus washing machine, etc. then why spend money bringing it with you, only to replace it soon?

It will cost you around £2,000 to move furniture, plus, say £500 for 6 months storage, so you could offset that against the cost of replacements. Bear in mind that second-hand furniture will only sell for about 25% of the cost of new on Ebay, Gumtree, etc, unless you're really lucky.

There isn't the same range of self-storage options in Spain as the UK, but the prices are comparable / a little cheaper:

There are shops you will recognise - DFS, Ikea, etc. along with others that you won't and prices are similar to the UK. You might consider it nice to start your new life in Spain with new furniture, purposely bought to fit in with your new property - and you have 6 months to choose it?

Car - it's easier to buy and drive a Spanish registered car, but the used market isn't as developed in Spain and prices are higher - mainly because company car fleets are almost non-existent, so these don't filter into the second-hand market; and there is a tradition of handing used cars down to family members until they run into the ground. There will be lots of high-mileage, small, ex-hire cars - but these may not suit.

If you have a 'nice', expensive car in the UK, then bear in mind what money you would receive in selling it (and the market will be strange as there will be a glut of pre-registered 'new' cars that dealers will be desperate to sell following the Covid lockdown). Then that type of car would be costly to replace with an equivalent, if that's what you want.

Your LHD options in the UK will also be minimal, so, if you can afford to do so, and you don't want to keep your UK car, I would suggest flying over and buying a Spanish-registered car, then drive it back to collect dog, etc. for the move; and leave your UK car with a friend or relative to sell when you can.

Hope this helps!

Sadly I don’t own a ‘nice’ expensive car, I was thinking of maybe trying to buy a Spanish reg LHD car here and then drive it over or drive my old banger over and then scrap it and buy a car when I get there.

I couldn’t leave my dog, he’s our baby, so the flying option isn’t really an option we’d consider.

As for the furniture i think maybe you’re right, it would be nice to start a fresh with some new stuff in our new home.

Thank you for your comments.

Thanks, There’s so much to think about, so it’s really helpful to hear about other people’s experiences.

Nothing wrong with ikea, in fact today here in Uk would be an ideal ikea day as it piddling down. ☹️I’m looking forward to the heat , although I’ll probably moan that it’s too hot once I’m there, it’s in our nature to complain about the weather 😂

Like Phil we moved to Camposol relatively recently. For us it was July 2018.

We drove from Grantham to Portsmouth, ferry to Santander (arrived 5 pm) . Stayed overnight then drove to Camposol.

We had 3 dogs with us. The little car (really little - a UK RHD Chevrolet Matiz) breezed the journey. We sold it shortly after arriving here and it went back to the UK. We bought a Spanish car.

Many houses are sold with furniture included. Some even leave a car too!

We shipped some furniture over, but have very little of it left. Most has been replaced with local bought stuff.

I thought your options for buying a Spanish-registered LHD car in the UK would be virtually nil, but I found this!
