Hi

We have just started our purchase on a 2 bed top floor apartment and are very excited to have our holiday home, when we can finally travel that is...

This is our first Spanish property and have been quoted 600euro by the Solicitor for connecting our utilities, including contracts.. In the UK you join a utilities company for free when you move into a property so I wondered if anyone had any advice on this? Seems a lot of money but, like i said, i dont know how these things work in Spain although a bit of online research also says its free.. hmmm?.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Looking forward to meeting people once we eventually get there.

Lorraine & James xx

Hi connection charges are free unless there are outstanding bills and the connection was cut because of this.

Solicitors throughout the world will charge whatever they consider they will get away with, I have over the past 20 odd years purchased many properties and had property transactions, and I have never once used a solicitor in the early days I just used a translator.

I would suggest you chat with the estate agent and ask them to arrange the connection (remember they are getting a fee) or seller and get the details of the utility suppliers, then contact them yourselves, they will speak English. Also contacting the suppliers yourself will give you a little insight into the Spanish way of life.

Congratulations on your purchase.

Kind regard

Ed

Hi Ed,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me, I really appreciate your experience and advice and will do just that. I’ll speak to my agent and then speak to the suppliers ourselves. Thought it sounded a little odd.. the cheek of the solicitor!!

Great to find this forum and speak to people who have the experience as you just don’t know when it’s your first time :)

thank you again.
