My hubby is doing the Christmas Day Mar Menor swim.   He's even bought some new speedos for the occasion!  Noah was a lad last time he bought a new pair.   I shall be on the beach videoing and cheering everyone on.

As you say, we live here, love our lives and regularly go to the beach.  Plenty of fish, of all sizes, if there was pollution as happened in the big Gota Fria in 2016, it kills the fish.  So the sea and beaches here are perfectly safe to swim in.

I don't doubt it's safe to swim in, but whether it's algae or seagrass, or a bit of both it's not very appealing, I think it will be a long time before the blue flag status returns.

Seagrass provides shelter for fish and seahorses, so they are thriving and the various councils are aggressively removing any seagrass washed ashore. There is currently no algal bloom. so, listen to the daily swimmers who say water quality is the best in many years.,

In summer, when the water temperature is high, there is some algae, but close to shore, the big numbers of feet in the water stir up the sand, so it seems turbid. If you swim out further as the daily swimmers do, they always report clearer water.

Now December 19th 2022, a walk to the end of the Espejo pier, as I have just done,  shows great water clarity and plenty of fish. ...

...lace along the promenade. As I e mentioned in previous posts, I love the LosAlcazares/ Narejos area, just a pity about the damage done to the water, will it get its blue flag status back anytime soon, who knows.
