Hi,

We come out to spain several times a year and wondered how practical it would be to keep a car at Alicante airport? It would be secondhand, probably circa 5k euro value. We are in our 60's with no convictions/accidents etc.

Are there cars which attract lower road tax as in the uk?

Any input welcome!

Regards

Jim

Car tax and insurance is much cheaper here in Spain I pay 62 euros a year 1600 cc Peugeot SW Insurance fully comp plus full breakdown insurance (compulsory in Spain) " about 300 euros.

Second-hand cars seem more expensive here also higher mileage. but you wont find the rust buckets

Remember that you must arrange for an ITV when due, and that the car will need servicing. A good parking company will arrange this for you (for a fee). Look at Plane Parking Alicante - we use them for when we go to the UK for a month or whatever so not an annual contract but have always been excellent - they check that the car starts a couple of days before you are due to collect it. When the auxiliary battery on our hybrid had gone flat they rang us to tell, then co-ordinated with our insurance broker and the breakdown service to get it going. Full marks to Liberty in Los Alcazares and to Plane Parking.

There are several companies (e.g. Plane Parking, VIP Parking, Victoria Parking, etc.) that will look after your car near Alicante airport (and some also cover Region de Murcia airport as well) for around €300 per year. You generally drop your car with them and they take you in a shuttle bus to the airport and then are there waiting with your car when you return. You can arrange for them to carry out your car's ITV (MOT) when it is due and servicing, etc. You should consider one which offers indoor storage as I have known the cars belonging to friends be damaged by hailstones, when left parked outside; and also the sun damages paintwork.

In my experience, insurance rates are similar to the UK, but you tend to insure the car, not the driver, so most policies cover 'any driver, aged 26 or over'. The policies also usually include breakdown cover in the price.

Car tax is based on emissions, as in the UK, so you may find you pay slightly more tax for an older car if the emissions are higher than a similar new car. For comparison, I pay €24 per year tax for a 2020 Ford Puma.

Hope this helps!
