Recently there have been some dogs who have died of poisoning due to blue green algae in lakes in the British Isles. We will be over soon and wondered if the Mar Menor was safe for dogs to play and swim in? I've read there was a lot of blue green algae in 2021, but can't find any recent information.

Dogs are actually not allowed on the beaches on the Mar Menor , however there are specific dog beaches but the only ones I know are in Mazarron however I am suer someon else will be able to supply you with more information

There is a dog beach at the los narejos end, near to Spinosa. This is the only place you can legally take your dog in the beach. Haven't ever seen any algae as you describe there, it isn't the best part of the beach but your dog is more at risk from fishermen's hooks than algae.
It's fine for a shallow splash but just be careful as the kitesurfers nearby churn up all the water and it gets murky quickly.
The best dog beaches are in Mazarron and there is also a dog beach near to playa flamenca. These are med beaches so the water is better for dogs to swim in.
