If I become a Spanish Resident, will my UK state pension be taxed. Someone told me no, someone told me yes.

The short answer is Yes.

Remember, your pension is also taxed in the UK - although for the vast majority of people, their state pension is less than the individual allowance, so although they are liable for tax, they actually don't pay any tax.

Please see below for a link to the official government advice on this, but it's always worth speaking with a UK and Spanish tax expert - spending a small amount of money on expert advice can sometimes save a lot of money and hassle in the future!

That was my point, in the UK it isn't taxed because its less than the personal allowance. I hoped someone on here could tell me whether or not they are being taxed on their UK pension, and if so how much is taken off.

Yes because the personal allowance in Spain is much lower than the UK.

Tax free allowance for over 65s is 6,700 Euros. This rises to 8,100 Euros for over 75s so quite a bit less than the UKs £12,570. There are other allowances available depending on your circumstances.

Incomes up to 12,450 Euros are taxed at 19% for the national rate, plus there is a regional rate. This may be useful:   Taxes in Spain for tax year 2022 and 2023 | Experts for Expats

Added onto my Spanish pension, my small UK pension takes my "earnings" in Spain to a much higher level so my Spanish tax moves into a higher category and I end up paying almost as much extra tax as my UK pension pays me. Whilst I had a mortgage to pay, this was offset but now that our house is paid off, we have nothing left to offset. Regardless of whether tax is payable or not, you do have to do a Declaración de la Renta every year if you have any income or pension coming in from outside Spain.

Mm, crazy. The tax situation must be a huge negative to many thinking of becoming a residence. The Spanish Personal Allowance is ridiculous.

A National rate plus a regional rate? Ridiculous.

It depends how you look at it.

Contributions to the Region of Murcia will therefore depend on income. The annual IBI tax is a fraction of what one would pay in Council Tax in the UK. We have just paid 450 Euros for the year, back in England we would probably have to pay 10 times that!

True,I assume if you become a resident you don't pay the non resident tax, or is it replaced with a different tax. And looking at tax on the current UK pension, its probably only around 600 euros a year tax. There's a lot to think about, another thing I need to look into is prescription charges,  it's free in UK, but I have around 10 different meds each month. I think I read somewhere that the prescription cost depends on total income .

if you are a uk state pensioner with an S1 to access the Spanish health system, in Murcia I pay 10% of prescription charges with a 10€ cap

Yes tax is probably a bit more overall but many other things are cheaper and I know where I’d rather be!!
