Thanks for the link.
I've been following this closely as it came up on my Facebook feed a few weeks ago. The gov.co.uk website has only recently been updated with this, although a calculator has been available for a while. It's shocking because some people will have 15 months (9 months carry over and renewal 6 months before expiry) knocked off their passport expiry date and any renewal will never be for the full 10 years, unless it's a brand new passport. Awful 😕.

Re the loss of some time on a passport - if maybe losing a few pounds - a meal for two - gets anyone more than very mildly niggled then perhaps they should find something serious to worry about!

A few pounds ? U turn up with passport issued by uk government with one date of expiry …turns out other uk.gov website has a different date.
Fill in all passenger locator firms using said passport no problems. Turn up at the airport with family as the original poster highlights, you ain’t flying if you are unlucky with dates. Few pounds could actually be £000s and a very unhappy family.

Hi
Below a very sad post from another group.
I checked it out: the passport of my husband says valid to 26.August 2026 the UKGOV.UK shows valid to 22.Septembre 2025 – that 1 year
A sad post from a member of another group, but a salutory lesson for those with British passports:
"***Sorry in advance for an extra long winded status! But anyone travelling abroad soon please read I’m putting this out there to help anyone who might be like us and totally unaware of this***
So today we were all checked in at Newcastle airport to travel to Palma. We headed to the gate to board the flight and handed over our passports, to be told we couldn’t travel because my passport was out of date !!
Now if you’re like us you’ll probably think the same that 6 months or more is adequate for travel. However this is NOT the case!! If you look at the expiry date on my passport (picture not included in this repost), it expires in April next year, or so I thought. But under new Brexit rules you now need to count from the issue date, taking away any “add ons as the airline put it” meaning my passport had actually expired.
The staff said they’ve turned away so many as people don’t realise but it’s your own responsibility to check the Gov website and that the links are on their website!
The biggest thing is though I have:
*checked in online with those passport details
*completed the government forms with those passport details to be issued a QR travel/entry code
*paid and had PCR fit to fly tests with those passport details
*ordered the Day 2 test kits arriving on Monday with those passport details.
And not one of those entries has flagged this information up
Families in a far worse position than us losing full holidays and ours was only a weekend, but absolutely gutted to say the least and so disappointed we couldn’t get there to surprise our friends. Would hate it to happen to anyone else. So everyone check your passports and check the Gov websites etc….Myself and many others had to learn the hard and expensive way today
Oh and you may also be forced to totally embarrass yourself and publicly cry like ME "
Afternote. As per a comment below, these are rules that came in Sept 2018. I would imagine that only those of us who have renewed our passports since then are aware of it - the UK Govt changed the rules on the quiet . I’m sorry to hear you got caught out. The Gov website has a facility you can use to check if your passport is still valid -

Many thanks for this information. I live here in spain and clicked on the link as I will be travelling back to the UK next year but unless I'm being thick I cannot find the United kingdom showing as a country to visit. I have read something about this before so will renew my passport well before date of travel. If any one can throw light on how to check this if you are loving here but travelling to the UK it would be very helpful. Many thanks.
Checked with gov uk and states if travelling to spain passport is valid up to 6 months of expiry date, my wife's passport has more years than mine so completely different expiry date but has the same status 6 months before expiry which is the same expiry on the passport. So how are people losing a year ?

It is not the UK government that have changed anything: it is purely down to the EU. Blame anyone who was duped into voting to leave…
Please explain what this has got to do with leaving the EU, and stop blaming Brexit and anyone who voted!
I renewed my passport and the only difference I can see is the change from adding any remaining months to the 10 years. This is a stealth tax in effect put in by Cameron and Johnson. My new passport clearly states the start and finish dates ......10 years in between. The fact that you must have 6 months left before leaving, effectively makes the passport a 9.5 year one!
