every person who buys a property in Spain or any other country should investigate taxes first.  Every European country has its own tax rules and if we chose to buy a holiday home in whichever we should accept those rules.  If you dont like the rules dont buy in that country

I did know what the taxes were on buying in Spain, that does not mean I cant debate the fairness of it or to ask people about it.

That unfortunately didnt answer my question just your opinion. If a nonresident applies for residency(which is mandatory) because of a 3mnth+ visit, does that person still pay a nonresident tax? Also do they still pay it if they dont stay 6mnths+ and therefore pay UK tax(not spanush tax) This is a genuine question I have never seen asked before.

You've confused me. I suggest you contact a tax consultant and get a definitive answer.

Gosh, I really didnt think it would be so confusing? If a nonresident applies for residency so they can stay over 3mnths, but doesnt stay over the 6mnths do they still pay nonresident tax? I thought there would be many nonresidents who have applied for residency after staying 3mnths because they have to under spanish rules, but still went back to UK for more than 6mnths could answer this question. I have read several postings recently where property owners who want to stay longer than 3mnths now applying for residency but not wanting to overstay 6mnths but they havent divulged whether they still pay non resident tax. Maybe Jim or Kim could answer this question as they are both so knowlegible. As to Chris,s initial query I am surprised more nonresidents havent answered his original posting and maybe that indifference to its fairness is why no-one has ever challenged it.

I wouldn't bother challenging it, life is too short!  And as said before, this is Spain.....if you disagree so strongly about Spanish law, it's probably best not o go there. Unless your Catastral is very high, you don't pay that much anyway, not worth worrying over........just look at the blue sky and relax.

Members of the EU Parliament are actually all elected same as in the UK, Spain and other countries.

As far as I'm aware, the only ones we (UK) vote in are our own MEP's, and there are 73! The likes of Juncker, Tusk, Barnier etc have not been elected, but they dictate what happens in the UK. Unfortunately we don't have any politicians of our own with the guts to stand up to them, either before the referendum or after.

I once contacted one of my MEP's and asked a question about Europe. That was over two year's ago and I'm still waiting for a reply!

From what I can see, all three were elected into their positions in the European Parliament / Council, where the UK's 73 representatives had a vote, therefore not sure what your issue is, given that they were elected by a majority!

Cut and pasted from Wikpedia:

Jean-Claude Juncker born 9 December 1954) is a Luxembourg politician serving as President of the European Commission since 2014. On 15 July 2014, the European Parliament elected him with a majority of 422 votes from a total of 729 cast.

Michael Barnier was appointed Minister for Agriculture in the French government on 18 June 2007, stepping down on 7 June 2009 upon his election as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He served as European Commissioner for Internal Market and Servicesunder Barroso.

The European Commission has appointed him as its Chief Negotiator in charge of the Preparation and Conduct of the Negotiations with the United Kingdom under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU)

Donald Tusk was elected Prime Minister in 2007 and with his party's victory in the 2011 Polish parliamentary election, he became the first Prime Minister to be re-elected since the fall of Communism in Poland.[4] In 2014, he became President of the European Council, and was re-elected to this position in 2017. He resigned as Polish Prime Minister to take the role, having been the longest-serving Prime Minister of the Third Polish Republic.

They are not 'dictating' what happens in the UK, simply trying to negotiate a deal with an EU member state who chose to leave!

They have been helped tremendously by the pathetic leadership of the UK, who cannot decide what the hell they want for the 'end game'.

Although I believe we should have remained in the EU, I think the UK's only option now is to play hard ball and call their bluff, otherwise it has been a pointless exercise. (but then, what do I know!)

So fed up off all of the b/s from both sides now and can't wait for 30th March, one way or the other!

Just a pity, we potentially deny the next generations the freedom of movement most on here have gotten so used to.

Just goes to prove my point. I don't recall having the chance to vote for who runs the EU, it's done remotely by the MEP's, and who can name them!

The UK government shouldn't be deciding what they want. The country voted out and that should be good enough, but as usual they want to make it as complicated as they can, aided and abetted by the media.

Freedom of movement has it's good and bad points, it depends where you live. I don't have a problem travelling around the world, and although visas and security are a pain, it's reassuring in this ever changing world. We managed to get around Europe very well before the EU, and we got our passports stamped.

I do agree with you that we should call their bluff (that should have happened two and a half years ago). We don't need a deal, the EU will miss the UK more than we'll miss the EU. Like you and millions of others, I too am fed up with it all. Anyway, this discussion is way off the original thread.
