Could anyone help us,  we are looking to change our bank to one that doesn't charge huge banking fees.  Your suggestions will be appreciated.

My husband and I both have Sabadell Expansion Accounts, plus credit and debit cards and we don't pay anything in charges. We both have only our pensions paid in and pay all our bills by direct debit. We also have our home insurance with them but in the years that we have been with them, have never been charged anything. You can't get any cheaper than that!

Do plenty of research before opening a Spanish bank account.

Once you have opened one it is difficult to close it.

Bank charges are horrendous in Spain even if you do not use the account !!

Use the search facility at the top of this page & search 'Banking' & Free Banking'.

There is lots of good information there.

You don't actually need a Spanish Bank account these days despite what the Spanish will tell you.

My advice would be to open a Wise.com euro account & use that for all your Spanish Direct Debits.

Excellent rates very very quick transfers & you get a debit card.

Although if you use the debit card to withdraw cash at an ATM you will be charged.

I have written a lengthy posting guide in Banking titled "free Spanish bank for non residents". In Spain 99%of banks charge fees for non resident accounts and free for residents with various conditions(deposit x every month or take our house insurance etc.) Now virtually all banks charge for their accounts, resident or not. I changed to Cajamar in 2019 March and not paid a cent in fees since, no conditions and we, re non residents. Read my guide and many replies to posts like yours with vast info on applying. I can't recommend them higher.

Regards

Pauline
