Hi everyone, I've just moved to the area with my kids and finding conflicting information about how to get my NIE in this area. I wondered if someone could tell me what is the best way to do it please?
Many thanks,

Hello Hollie,
You need to register as a resident, in Cartagena or Murcia, in the local Oficina de Extranjeros, to get your NIE. Only if you plan to live here for more than three months.
I just worked as a translator for a couple,to get theirs in Cartagena.
Please, let me know if you need any help.
Regards

Hi Hollie,
There has been extensive chats on this forum about obtaining an NIE......and I believe the most effective, straight forward and cheapest way is to book your appointment online (for either Cartegena or Murica) and then attend your appointrent at whichever Police Station, which is what my partner did, everything sorted in a couple of hours.....and if you don't speak Spanish it would be a good idea to bring someone with you who does, just in case!.......doing it yourself should only cost around €10 however if you engage a solicitor it will cost significantly more.
Good luck....

This is not correct you do not have to be resident to get your NIE....go and see Andreea in Trebol estate agents in Los Alcazares 525 square and she will help you through the whole process for a small fee.
Unless you have good Spanish its difficult to do it all yourself!

That is correct, John. If they are living in Spain for more than three months, that is what they have to do according to Spanish law

Just to clarify: The NIE (numero identificacion extranjero) is like the British National Insurance number (and like the NI is your number for life) - an identifier needed to open a bank account in Spain and most other dealings with government, and many major purchases. You can get this as a resident or non-resident.
If you intend to spend more than 90 days in Spain (in one go!) you must register with the police on the register of foreigners.
If you are going to live in Spain you should apply for a Residencia (also at the National Police, and after 5 years here you may change this to be permanent status. This will help (along with signing on to the Padron at your Town Hall) when you want to register for health care, change your UK driving licence to a Spanish one, deal with the taxman and so on.
