Rather than us all reinventing the wheel, I recommend you read Jim Taylors comprehensive guides.

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/taxes-suma-nie-tax-advice-in-almorad%C3%AD-25/jims-guide-the-nie-39463/

He is from Almoradi near Alicante but you can follow the same procedure in Cartagena or Murcia.

Yes this is true, no need to be a resident to get NIE

This is not correct you do not have to be resident to get your NIE....go and see Andreea in Trebol estate agents in Los Alcazares 525 square and she will help you through the whole process for a small fee.

Unless you have good Spanish its difficult to do it all yourself!

No you don't have to be resident to get your NIE (in fact, if you were a resident you would already have your NIE) but you do have to register as a resident if you are planning on spending more that 90 days in Spain and obtaining both the NIE and registering as a resident can be done at the same time. Better to do this as soon as possible as if Brexit does go ahead, applications for residency from non-eu citizens involve much more paperwork and proof of healthcare and a higher amount of money in the bank.

How can a simple question about how to go about obtaining an NIE develop into a conversation about the need to be resident or not ..... Enough already.

It is not really a simple question....sadly for many years people have used the terms "NIE" and "Residencia" without really understanding what they are and that they are different things. It is a shame that there has not been an acronym for the "Certificado de Registracion Extranjeros" - yet another different thing - but this will be solved if the UK ever leaves the EU......maybe!

Yes those of us who are Non-Eu, in my case Australian, need a  TIE, a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, and that is much much harder to organise.

You could soon be grappling with that, depending if the job gets done

Roberto, current situation is that Spanish government say we who have permanent residence need do nothing - a TIE will be sent out automatically (and with no fee) as and when.

Peter,

Agreed, which is why getting NIE & Padron registration is so important for all Brits who do want to stay here.
