Hi,

We have owned our property in the area since 2018 using it as much as possible as a holiday home (apart from when we couldn’t over covid) and we are now currently seriously considering moving out permanently.

I will still need to work and our son will need to attend school, but I have no idea on the best way to do it following the brexit changes, can anyone offer advice on the quickest and easiest ways to do this.

Many thanks in advance.

You don't say what nationality you are but if you are British then you can no longer just move to Spain and get a job. There are so many hoops to jump through and as a third-country citizen, you cannot work without a work permit or a job offer. Depending on your occupation, you could become self-employed but again, this involves a certain amount of hassle. Your first step would be to apply for residency to allow you to spend more than 90 days in every 180 and then move on from there. There are lots of posts on this forum about how to do this if you do a search.

If you are moving from the UK, then you would need a visa, as follows:

1. Working visa - this needs to be applied for in conjunction with your employer - i.e. you can't just get a working visa and then move to Spain and try & get a job. This needs to be renewed every year and, for example, your employer may have to prove why they couldn't employ a native Spaniard instead of you. Note: Unemployment rates in Spain are high and the average salary in Spain is around 2/3rds of the average salary in the UK. You will also really need to be fluent or at least have good conversational Spanish.

2. Self-employed visa ('autonomo visa'). If you intend to be self-employed or start your own business, then you need this visa. You need a full business plan, evidence of contracts for work already in place; and sufficient 'means of maintenance' for you to live on if the business fails. Again, this needs to be renewed annually.

Hope this helps - and happy to answer any other questions you may have...
