Good to know Anni for others contemplating changing, but very surprised they closed on telephone call. I, m not the only one who has been told must do in branch. Maybe as you had visited and re warned you were doing it they put notes on your account to allow phone closure.

I, m sure you won't regret it, rather you, ll wish you,d done it years ago and saved the fees...

Hi Pauline, thanks for the information on Cajamar bank. We are currently with Bankia and they have started charging 14 Euroes every month even though we have a sizeable deposit with them. My Question is that is Cajmar able to get all direct debits trf or we have to get that information to them. Like in UK we ask the new bank and they get everything transfered smoothly.

They took all details re our direct debits but as I, d closed our Sabadell account same day and didn't want anything going wrong, I either telephoned or emailed(in Spanish using Google translate) and notified them myself. We chose a date after debits had just been paid to give sufficient time for paying from new bank following month. We had no problems. I don't think Spanish banks are as genned up on switching as UK. Suma have a english speaking department, all others I wrote email in English with Google translate turned on, copied and sent the email in Spanish. Easy as our Spanish is very limited. I had to do 5 emails. Make sure on initial visit to bank you tell them you are non residents as ours had us as residents(though we showed them our white paper NIE) but they initially had us as residents which they changed later with need for us to sign. Also they don't charge to notify Tax authorities re non resident like Sabadell did.

Hi Sue,

In an update to Pauline, when I changed my account to cajamar in September this year the bank official did not support with transferring dd’s.....however he give me a print out of my new banking details which he stamped with the banks official stamp (for legitimacy purposes) which I presented to one service provider and sent a copy of to the others.....apart from a slight hiccup with the water company everything worked out well.....

Good luck with it all........

I have just made my first bank transfer from the UK to my Spanish account with Solbank since Brexit. Solbank charged €18 on a €224 transfer!

Transfers prior to 1 January 2021 did not incur any fees.  Has anyone else experienced fees of this nature with any Spanish bank account including Wefferent since Brexit and is it a consequence of leaving the EU?

It appears that this is a consequence of Uk leaving the EU for most banks. I can't comment on Cajamar bank as don't transfer bank to bank which I learned early on has a poorer rate. I use Transferwise and it appears users of them have not been charged on depositing funds since 1/1/21. Highly recommend Transferwise.

Hi Pauline

Yes I normally use Transferwise but decided yesterday to use a new provider (Azimo) because they had a free fee deal combined with a £25 Amazon voucher. The transaction (SWIFT) went through smoothly apart from the 8% charge by Solbank in Spain. Looks like I should have stuck with Transferwise. Can't wait to get back to Spain and get the Wefferent acccount set up - I am really tired of my bank's charges now!

I have just received this email (14.1.2021) from Banco Sabadell with regard to the charge of €18 on a transfer:

Dear MrFletcher,

With regard to your email, we would like to inform you that due to Brexit, the UK is not in the EEE since 1st January 2021. From that day on fees will be applied to transactions made from the UK and to the UK. You'll be charged 0,35% (minimum €18) to receive transfers from the UK and 0,75% (minimum €22) to make transfers from your bank Sabadell account to any account in the UK.

And remember we're also available 24/7 by phone on 963 085 000, via email at[email protected]and on social networks (Twitter and Facebook).
