I have recently gone through the process too, however you are the only one that can make the call as to whether it is right for you.

The NLV process is fairly time consuming and does require a high level of income requirement to obtain. (as per previous poster)

PeterC gave some sound advice in that you should look at pros and cons of residing in Spain before commencing with the NLV process. (just in case the negatives outweigh the positives)

I would strongly suggest you get some professional advice, given your concerns about taxes, etc.

The tax question was just one topic of several, I just wanted to get a better idea of how things work post brexit. Of course I plan to use professionals to assist with the correct documentation and following correct procedures.

To be honest I didn’t get a positive vibe with a Peters reply, I know this idea won’t be straight forward or cheap however I was looking for a “ it’s well worth it” line or such which I didn’t get when I read his post maybe I misinterpreted it.

I have known a few people over the years who have moved out to Spain only to return several years later.

So to summarise I was just looking for some advice ( not on tax only) but the whole idea of planning a move abroad. I’m just doing my homework that’s all. I have another post of moving furniture across and another on local cycle clubs…

Thanks again for your input

I am trying to find out as much information as possible and who better than the people who have already taken the plunge.

Peter c didn’t sound too positive about the whole relocation idea I got the feeling he wouldn’t recommend it?

Anyway it matters not I will continue to try to get answers to all my questions and only then will I can make an informed decision

Thanks any

Hi James,

The reasons for wanting to relocate will be different for each and everyone of us.....and only we, ourselves, can either make a go of it or not.

I too am going through the process - we have our appointment in three weeks time at the Consulate.

Like you, I scoured the internet looking for answers, but at the end of the day, it comes down to a personal decision.....and to be quite honest we can't wait to get out to Spain.

Will it work out - who knows, but it wont be for the lack of trying or positive commitment. We will be relocating with our eyes wide open.

I am often bemused by those who say it's not great, whilst still living there! According to research, the overwhelming reasons for expats returning are their money runs out or health reasons.

Is Spain going to be perfect? - of course not. But we think it will be perfect enough for us. Do we have all the answers - no we don't. There will be Pros and Cons....but on reviewing everything we can afford the Monetary criteria and will have enough income to maintain a modest (but comfortable) lifestyle.....and for us, the quality of life in living in a country with a gentler climate will be worth it.

We can't wait.

Regards,

Frank

Hi Frank, thanks for the reply!

This is the type of refreshing message I can relate to

I have know a few people over the years that have moved to Spain only to return a few years later, my friends mother said she returned because it was too hot and too much sun…unbelievable!

Yes we all have our own reasons and expectations, I have been speaking to another fella called Richard who has been not only fantastic but realistic.

I’m still finding my feet so who better to pass on information that people that had already or were in the process of moving.

Thanks again Frank and I hope it all works out

James

This is the latest Progress for our NLV for anyone else contemplating doing the same:

The requirements for the Manchester Consulate are

Two copies of the National Visa Application Form duly filled in and signed by the applicant. Completed. Quite straight forward to do

Two recent colour photos with white background, 3.5cm x 4.5cm. Done

Original passport, valid for at least 1 year from submission of application and photocopy of the picture page. Photocopied all of the passport just in case.

Police clearance from countries of residence for the last 5 years (for British citizens and residents: ACRO criminal record certificate). Must be legalized by means of a Hague Apostille Certificate and translated into Spanish Received, Apostilled and translated - quite straight forward to do

Medical certificate: The applicant must be accredited to not suffer from any diseases that can have serious health consequences in accordance with the provisions of the International Health Regulations 2005”. Must be legalized by means of a Hague Apostille Certificate and translated into Spanish. Now resolved. Our doctors practice were of no help with this as they couldn't understand what it was for and why they hadn't been asked for it before. So we contacted a Spanish doctor, who after sending us a medical questionnaire and holding a Zoom consultation, issued our certificate there and then. We had them sent by email within 10 minutes and the originals in the post yesterday. This was more hassle than it should have been, however, as the certificate has been issued in Spain and it is in Spanish, I saved on having it Apostilled and translated

Medical insurance with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain valid for at least the first 12 months of stay in Spain. Policy in place and all ready to go, awaiting certificate. Quite costly, but once we are in Spain we will apply for the S1 and go on the Spanish Health Service

Documents proving sufficient financial means for your living expenses and accommodation (€2,259.60 per month plus €564.90 per each family member). e.g. stamped bank statements, pension etc. Went into my bank (Barclays) and asked for statements. They printed them off and stamped and certified them there and then. I also have copies of my Pension details just in case

Form EX-01 - Non-lucrative Temporary Residence Authorization Application Form. Completed. Bit unsure on this as it is in Spanish. The guide they give looks different in parts from the actual form!

Form 790-052 - Residency fee form. Completed Bit unsure on this as it is in Spanish. The guide they give looks different in parts from the actual form!

So, it looks like we will have everything in place for our appointment.

I've seen that Manchester has very good reviews for being helpful and that they are turning applications around in under two weeks at the moment, so fingers crossed.

Total cost so far £3,425

No matter how hard the process is remember at least Spain has a immigration process, post Brexit a Spaniard wishing to move to the UK to retire is unable to do so, their is no visa for any such person even if you have loads of money.

One of the main reasons I moved to Spain was Brexit and even when it's 40c I would rather be here than in Boris's pathetic Little Britain.

Good luck with your venture, it will be worth it.

Hoping for some information . I have sold my house in the uk and completion is 15 nov when I plan on moving to Spain to join my son and grandchildren . I had planned on applying for a NLV whilst in Spain . Is this possible or do I have to start the process now while I am in the uk and registered at a uk address . I feel it would be easier in Spain as I will have more time  . Any advice would be great . Thanks

Hi Steph

From my knowledge of the rules you cannot apply from Spain.

Others may have a different opinion but I doubt that

You need to apply in the UK. The process is shown in my post on page 1 of this thread...
