I don't live there yet Dave, but if they are like our UK & Irish sparrows which I'm sure they they are, they'll start nesting anytime now (recognised from1st March here)!!
Have you tried cutting & moulding a piece of 'small holed' chicken wire and clipping it over the outlet, making sure there are no sparrows trapped within though? You'll know when they start nesting, as they will be very busy moving new nesting materials into it.
Your new nest boxes must be suitable and positioned correctly for (house) sparrows. Different breeds have different requirements so far as size, shape, location and type & size of hole / access they need.
I feel you may have left it a bit late personally speaking, autumn would be the best time, if you can live with them as it is that is? They will need period of time to get used to and accept the new offering.
I'll try to find and attach a good photo of a house sparrow box for you. Enjoy them for now.
