OK, to the voip users then, does this sound competetive to you:
£5 month for the 'line rental' and you get a UK number with area code of your choice. Then you pay for your calls.
UK landline is currently about a quarter of a penny per minute, uk mobile just over half penny a minute. All calls billed per second.
I do not pay any line rental, just pay for the calls.
Facetime or Skype, we do it every day to talk with the grandchildren. Works perfectly !
Skype, Facetime (better than Skype) , Messenger, regular mail.....

Get a VOIP phone with a UK number, that way when your friends/family call it is usually free for them and when you call it is very cheap, costs me less than €0.10/hr to call a mobile, even less to a landline. It is also cheaper when phoning a spanish mobile.

As a last resort, I also have two smart phones, which can I can punch in UK numbers on. :)
We use Skype and it works perfectly on our Internet connection. Good sound and image. We are with Compufurf
