When you do the import of a car together with Residentia (within 6 months) you don't pay Import tax.

Quite correct, but you still need to payout for an "import" ITV inspection, change of headlights and having reversing light on the correct side. Get a quote from a specialist, and check that it is six not three months.

I thought that the law had changed and tax is now payable. It's worth checking out with Cab Spain.

What GerryB says is correct, as long as you are not resident in Spain, in which case it is illegal for you to drive a UK-registered car, so watch your timings!

Oh thank you for that, that is useful to know.  Reading up it says that you can drive a UK plate car up to 6 months but nothing about this being illegal if you become a resident during this time.  We will definitely watch out.  We will probably sell the car and get a Spanish one before then as it is far too expensive to get the car registered in Spain.

Have you checked the costs for rematriculation? Although I think you are always better in a lhd car, and a ‘known’ model in Spain (for service and parts) I don’t know whay you woukd consider far too expensive. Maybe get a quote from one of the specialists here?

We just had the ITV inspection, nothing had to be changed (it's a Belgian car), the only cost we had is the inspection, the Spanish plates, the traffic taks and of course Insurance. Still approx. 800 euros less than if we had to pay import tax. We do all this through a good friend who lives here and knows the way and the right people. Very grateful for that.
