I'm sitting in Corvera RMU airport, the Duty Free is closed and also Subway, is this the demise of this airport?

Wish they would ,it was much better, but I think it's returned to military.
I hope not - and I think not.
You are there on one of the quietest days of one of the quietest months of the year.
November, January & February are the months with the least flights worldwide (apart from ski resorts).
Worldwide, when it comes to days of the week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday are about average for volume of flights. Monday, Thursday, and Friday are, respectively, 1%, 2.5%, and 4% above average. Saturday, meanwhile, is almost 8% below average.
RMU is on it's 'winter timetable' until Easter, when the volume and range of flights will increase...
Thanks to 'tinternet for the info...

It was only ever on loan from the air force - it's the Spanish National Air Force training centre - and has been since 1927 (or arguably 1915).
Corvera was chosen for the location of RMU as the regional & national government aims to increase tourism and business in Murcia. Corvera is closer to Murcia City, has good road connections and has plenty of room to expand, when compared to San Javier.
It has been a bit unlucky, in that it was started in 2008, then mothballed due to the financial crash, finally opening in 2019 - just before COVID hit!

Hi Geoff, some may say that Subway being closed is blessing sent to try to prevent the ingestion of their processed food, when all around us, we have wonderful, fresh fruit, vegetables and other food. Safe travels😇

The passenger numbers at Covera for 2023 were 877,796, up 4.6% on 2022. It is worth noting that San Javier handled more than 2 million passengers at its peak.
There are a couple of factors that lead me to hope that numbers will increase in 2024. I read that there are some carriers interested in taking new slots at the airport, both internal and international. Also, the government has started an initiative for smaller airports in Spain that handle less then 3 million passengers. This initiative is to try and and attract more carriers to use these smaller airports. Essentially for the next 3 years any extra passenger numbers, over the previous years total, airline carriers will not have to pay airport passenger fees.
Whilst it is nice, at the moment, arriving at Corvera and being outside of the airport in 10-15 minutes and returning to catch your flight home an hour prior to departure and whizzing through security and passport control, due to the few flights currently handled each day, I don't think this can be profitable or viable in the long-term. So, I hope numbers increase and it gets much busier, for the local economy and to maintain the convenience for many travellers and property owners in the area.
If it gets busier I think the transport links and some of the other things that people have issues with will improve. The increased numbers will facilitate improvement.
I will continue using it as much as I can and recommend it to others travelling to the area.

I thoroughly agree with your sentiments, though how it can continue to exist with all the superstructured I don't know

There is no going back to San Javier...its a mixed blessing ..its nice and quiet murcia airport ..much less so than mad alicante as is the journey to and from as alicante is wacky races...they are working all the time to get more business but if anyone hadn't noticed we have been in a recession in the UK for about 15 years so there just isn't the business all year round to sustain traffic all year round...make some sandwiches I always do ..subway is terrible food anyway ..duty free you can get on the plane ...

I think its a lovely clean and peaceful friendly airport and can only get better. I just wish there was more flights as hate using Alicante,
So lucky to arrive and depart in such a relaxed setting and I don't think it will remain this way. I bring food with me as not a fan of Subway. Will enjoy the airport while I can.
