I agree completely with Christine 78. You are spot on - it happened to me when I sold my house last year - I am glad I am now back fully in UK and can trave anywhere else in the world… than going to the same over 20 years

With me there’s the complication that I have two dogs. Not many landlords allow two medium size dogs and I have to pay extra.

I originally thought that I could let my house for 5 months (May to September, the more expensive months) when I am not there (with an agent to look after it). That might earn the expenses

Too many different views on what constitutes a comfortable lifestyle!

Why not copy the sort of list that they use on the "Wanted Down Under" tv programmes - list everything you would want to buy, then go window shopping in a few supermarkets. Things like IBI, energy bills, water, insurances and tax will depend on what sort of property you want to live in and where ...

...it is.

A pretty good guide is the basic requirements for an NLV - €36000 per year for a couple.

I wish I had 36,000 to live on ! We live very comfortable on 15,000. But have to draw on savings for new cars and holidays.

You are fortunate that you came to live here pre-Brexit, or no matter how much you can live on you still need to show income of well over €30k.

The shame is that although Boris is at last being found out about his partying lies, they dare not tackle the even more obvious lies leading to Brexit.

Hi I had a holiday home in spain for exactly 20 years ( with my husband) and we decided to sell our property and moved back to the UK. Sold it in December 22.

Spain is not cheap as it used to be - in December 22  supermarket meat was way expensive than in the UK… was shocked about the difference in price.. eating out had increased too/ everything was more expensive.. compared to what we used to pays years before. I know it’s everywhere in othe...

...r countries but don’t think Spain is cheap …

Where on earth do you live in Spain? It is cheap. Menu del dia in the port with a bottle of wine for two 15 Euro Four courses! Name me another country in Europe that have really good meals at this price. Council Tax 350 Euro per annum in Pliego.etc etc.

Last time I ate out in the U.K. a month ago, I paid £10.50 for a bowl of soup and a small bottle of water.  My council tax for a small 2bed cottage in Bromley is £165 a month…just saying.

As had already been said, it is not what it costs you to live, it is whether you can show sufficient income to qualify for residency. You will soon rack up a fair old bill for living if you eat out all the time, cheap or not.

I agree but, for example, one can get a Sunday roast in several Torre de la Horadada restaurants with a dessert for 13€. I personally have only done that once in three months as I am vegetarian and have a gluten allergy, but I find food cheaper in the shops than in the U.K.

Hi All

Could anyone please let me know what me and my wife would need in income per week  to be able to live a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle we don't smoke or drink and will own our house outright .just a rough estimate please would be great. Thank you very much

Hi, we took the plunge and bought during 2020.  It really is a matter of deciding what lifestyle you want and where in Spain that will be.  Brexit doesn't bother us as we are happy to be based between the 2 countries.  In all honesty,  I don't think I would want to be in either place more than 3 months at a time.  We find each country has its own advantages/disadvantages.  When we bought, we bought cheaply with the understanding that any money we spent to buy or improve would be 'lost' as far as our thought process was concerned.  So we have spent nothing we weren't/aren't prepared to lose. I know that sounds crazy, but that's the way we deal with it.  So, for the cost of living, we chose inland around the Bullas area because  - basically - the appeal is the eating out/coffee out lifestyle and culture; we cannot afford tourist/coastal prices and we find the price differences massive between inland and more well known areas.  Also, we have a very traditional Spanish home (so no air con, pool etc) surrounded by Spanish neighbours.  We absolutely love our lifestyle and can manage to live a good life frugally.  We are so much more restricted in the UK as the cost of living is appallingly high.  Sorry the post is so long, just wanted to give a balanced view and how the 90/180 day rule can work well for some people x

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

You need c. €36,000 per annum as a couple to obtain the required visa (NLV) to live in Spain. However, this doesn't mean that you need to spend that much each year to live comfortably in Spain.
