Ive done both and certainly found driving all the way avoiding tolls is a fair bit cheaper

We are taking our dog over next June ... we will be in Spain for 2 months we will be taking the car and ferry ...it's only a 8 hr drive from the ferry port in Spain to Camposol..it costs approximately £800 for the car and 2 adults ... the only other way is to drive All the way it takes around 24...

... hrs by road ..and it costs approximately the same ...you cannot take a dog on a plane .

I drive from Calais to the Port regularly and it's never cost me £800!! It is by far the cheapest way to do the trip and ideal if you have a dog with you as you can stop when you (or the dog) needs a break.

Rma 44 .So how much does it cost you with tolls / fuel / hotel /ferry ... when you drive over my £800 includes everything ferry/fuel /hotel/tolls.

Ferry anything between £45 and £55 one way. Diesel, just over 2 tanks for 1400 miles. Don't use tolls...no need to, and hotel cost depends how many nights you want to stop, but I've never had to pay any more than 60€ a night and don't normally stop overnight more than twice. Obviously if you don't like a long drive, I can see the attraction of the long ferry.....but it's expensive!

Dogs can travel  by plane but I wouldnt subject an animal to the freezing cold hold, and it is very expensive.

I did the overland trip in 2008 with 3 small dogs. Euro tunnel Folkestone to Calais £90. Calais to Tours overnight stay 30 euros room only dog friendly.Tours to Pau overnight stay same as Tours. Pau to Camposol over the Pyrenees no toll roads 15 hours with stops for dogs etc. Clocked 1500 miles from Hereford to Camposol, in a Rover 75 averaged 36mpg. Of course costs have gone up since then. I planned and booked every aspect of the trip online so it was very easy. Ensure if driving through France you are carrying all the items that are compulsory in your car. Get the Europe card in your satnav and you should have a good trip. Getting the dogs prepared for the trip with vet visits vacs etc cost more than the  journey itself.

On our future trips, we will also have to look for dogfriendly hotels since we adopted a rescue puppy, but I think they are rather easy to find.

Yes Lydia, the French are a lot more dog friendly than the Spanish. You should be able to find plenty of reasonably priced hotels in France online. If you have the time I recommend two overnight stops in France. When I returned I only had the one night stopover in Pau, It made for a very tiring  trip back to Hereford
