Check a few others. Especially Centauro. Take out your own insurance which covers 1 year and is very cheap. Rent for shorter period the rent again. Don’t buy any insurance from the hire company. They will hold money but you get it back if no damage. And you can claim yourself if there is damage. Avoid Goldcar or any associated company.

Watch out when you have your own car hire excess policy and do split rental periods. You could, like me, end up maxing out your credit card as some car rental companies don't lift the excess block they've put on your card on the day you return the car.

Goldcar get a lot of bad press but up to now I’ve not had a problem I booked through Ryanair web site this year and got a super cheap deal including the extra insurance this didn’t stop the desk clerk trying to sell me more, saying the insurance I bought was inadequate.

Hertz screwed me over one year charging me for a damaged wing mirror that wasn’t damaged on return.

The photo they sent me could have been months old even though they signed it off as undamaged on return they still did me for the thick end of £200, read the small print they say, that would lop about 3 days off your holi

Been using Goldcar for 10 yrs. Never a problem. Their insurance is expensive but great for peace of mind. Never have to worry about scratches or any damage, all covered. Nearly always have new, less than 6 months old, cars. Office in terminal at Alc.

I used Centauro recently. They checked the car on return and put the insurance deposit immediately back on to my card.

I suppose if you've had a bad experience with any service provider you will give it a wide berth in future. Have a bad meal/service at a restaurant and you don't go back. I have used Ryanair loads of times and never had a problem, it does what it says on the tin, cheap and cheerful and usually on time. But they have the worst press of all the budget airlines

We all love to moan about Ryanair but where would we be without them. And in fairness they have behaved better in recent times. If you are flexible there are some really cheap flights to be had. My worst car hire experience was with Avis in Barcelona. Basically they robbed me with non existent damage. And they are one of the big international companies.

I agree with everyone about Ryan Air. Personally I have never experience any problems. If you don’t like them fly with British Airways. I’m sure they’ll charge the same 😁. Also their car hire is very competitive.

Just go down the list and pick out Centuro. Don't bother with Gold Car.  As everyone says, get your own Excess Insurance Policy.   I use “Insurance4you” which is £39.99 for 1 year. Just show your policy at the car hire and tell them you don’t want their cover.
