I use Icarhire insurance and had to use them the time Avis mugged me. They were very good and settled the claim. The only problem I had was getting the paperwork from Avis. If you ever have a problem make sure you get as much paperwork from the hire company before you leave their office.

I agree with the car hire excess policy - we used carhireexcess.co.uk and bought an annual policy with £7500 excess cover for £32.30.

Haven't had to make a claim so don't know how that side works, but we have more than saved the cost of the policy in 1 rental, not having to have the car rental insurance premium (usually about £25 a day) on top of the car hire.

Martin Lewis also recommends car hire excess policies - if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me!

Take a look at https://www.moneymaxim.co.uk/ you can compare car hire excess policies for an even better deal.

This industry needs looking at, the price you see should be the price you pay. The price of insurance can work out more than the hire cost. A poor fella next to me was bullied into paying €280 excess charge. I was listening in, she said one scratch could cost you €800 so he coughed up.

In hindsight I should have told him it’s far cheaper to buy excess insurance online, I got free meerkat meals & movies to boot!!😀

If that was the case we would all be paying top whack for the insurance. I'm surprised people are still falling the insurance add on sales pitch. Annual excess policies have been around for year's, they are cheap and from experience very easy to claim on.

Looking that other side of the argument, these companies offer really cheap car hire, so they have to try and recoup some money. I hire up to six cars a year and last year I hired a brand new automatic for 109€...and that was for a month! Excess blocked was 800€ because I had my own insurance.

It really is a no brainer to plan ahead.

I used Centauro after recommendations on here and they were great.

Had my own annual insurance and was out just after the recent floods and had no problems what's s ever so will definitely be using again, plus they are sending me e-mails will 15%-20% off next time I use them.

But make sure you use a credit card for the holding deposit and make sure it is the same card as when you book the car when picking up.

Couple in front of me had to buy their insurance because the cards didn't match.

Wiber, they are at Alicante, not so sure about Corvera as I can't get a flight into there.

Yes' I've been standing behind people who've been caught out by that. The companies love it as they make more  money. If you're not sure, be prepared for all their reasons and excuses. I was once told that there had been a lot of windscreens smashed and I wouldn't be covered.....just let it go over your head and stand firm. They give way eventually. Annoying if you have a long onward journey though.

Wiber, can’t say I’ve heard off them

Are they off airport? Is it a shuttle service?

Yes, really good shuttle. It was all brand new when I first used them and very impressive.
