On Tuesday, we spent a pleasant afternoon walking the (cleaned) promenade at Santiago de la Ribera and enjoying drinks at our favourite chinguirito. Yes, the beach is destroyed but I saw at least 2 couples sunning themselves on it regardless. On Wednesday I drove through Los Alcazares and cried seeing the devastation in the Old Town. It is NOT the place to go unless you're helping with the clean-up, but the new town and Los Narejos are much, much clearer. Hope this helps with your decision making. Bear in mind also that local businesses need your euros due to the trade they've lost.

In true British fashion we have decided to go and brave it out. We will make the most of it and support the businesses who need our help, we have been to LA many times and while it won’t be the place we know , Im sure we will do our best to make it an enjoyable stay. We will give feed back once we get there . Thanks everyone for your comments.
Excellent......
Well done !!

Well done Amelia, if people stay away that will make a bad situation worse!
We are flying out next week and with the forecast here of rain and 15c compared to sunshine and 29c in Los Alcazares it's a no brainer !
At home in Cumbria, Carlisle suffered devastating floods in 2005 and again in 2015 but recovered quickly as Los Alcazares will do.
Andy
We left Friday morning and will be back again on 9th October.
On Thursday we visited Torre de la Horadada which was clean with people sunbathing on the beach. There was a clean up operation on the beach, but I’m confident the beach is now clear. Unfortunately the seating area of the beach bar was destroyed and the chiranguitos closed, but this may be resolved.
Earlier in the week we visited Cala Cortina near Cartagena. Here the beach was untouched and there was evidence of where the storm water found its way to the sea.
I believe all mar menor beaches have gone following the sea rising by 0.7m as the rain water flooded into the sea.
Very sad to witness the devastation in Los Alcazares with the central and south areas worst effected and when we left were no go areas due to the mud, water and the clean up operation. It may take many weeks to clean up.
However the Chiranguitos in the Los Nero’s area are open as usual and whilst the beach is unsightly, the businesses fortunate not to be destroyed need customers.
My son flew out yesterday and has no regrets.

The beaches at Lo Pagan are fine, as is the promenade. All chiringuitos are open. Enjoy your holiday!

Thank you for that. Do you know if it’s the same further up the coast Ribeiro ? La Zenia etc
I'm in La Ribera. Most of the beaches here are almost back to their former glory. They've worked so hard. I came down to inspect the beaches the day after the storm. It was worse than I was expecting. I am actually down the beach at this minute! I wouldn't go in the sea. The sea has been tested, but the results are not available yet, to my knowledge. There is still thick mud in side streets. Considering the damage to the area, it is not looking too bad thanks to the local government. LA suffered badly during the storm so I would expect the clear up will take longer there.

Thank you for that . Walked along the front at LA last night. The beach has all but disappeared. Very sad . The old town appears to have suffered most. The Square is up and running but a few shops/restaurants not opened . Perhaps it’s too late in the season for them . Its going to take time .
