Recently someone posted on Facebook a government paper saying additional money having to be paid on delivery is wrong. Originally the deal regarding import duty, VAT etc was published and each company has interpreted it to suit themselves, instances given were charges made by Correos. Did anyone else see this article? If so has anyone got a copy they can send me?

This may be useful to some: DPD UK are now offering a service on their international hub where you pay the duty upfront in the uk. If your posting an item to yourself for Spain it sounds perfect. All sorted in the UK so should be much easier than giving the EU obscene taxes on small items.

The details are below:

What Do You Need to Know?
Since the 1st January any parcel into the EU considered a gift and the contents are over the value of £39 (including the cost of shipping) may be subject to taxes and duties charges.

How Parcel2Go Can Help
To avoid your recipient having to pay these charges before their parcel is delivered, you can now choose to pay these at the point of booking on Parcel2Go, this is called Delivery Duties Paid (DDP). This will take away the unnecessary inconvenience of your recipient having to pay any charges for a gift and also minimise any delays.

How to Select This Service
Simply select DPD as your courier and then, in the booking process, select the export reason 'gift', give as much detail as possible on the contents of the gift and choose 'yes I'll pay the taxes and duties.' These will then simply be added to your parcel shipping costs to pay at checkout.

Interesting I will tell friends and family to try it when sending thins to me in .Spain, which isn’t often thank goodness. What we don’t understand is the VAT, it is charged in the U.K. and again in .Spain, so it is being charged twice on the same item. Have you any thoughts on this Peter ?

Probably best to look on the DPD website - if the info re VAT is not there they should have a way to ask.

Maybe start here: https://www.dpd.co.uk/content/about_dpd/export-goods.jsp

Surely the additional costs nowadays are for import duty and not VAT? Anything sent from a third country is now considered as an import.

Received a slim A4 sized package from the UK through the Correos. It had a customs delaration clearly marked as "Christmas Cards" but we had to pay 4+ euros plus 21% IVA plus another non specified tax making a payment of around 6.50 euros. All just to receive our Christmas card from our kids. Money making or what?

You’re lucky to receive them. As I’ve previously posted on here I’m still waiting for mail posted in UK in September!

Well, I ordered a card from Moonpig for my husband last week and it arrived 5 days later with no additional charges.

Correct. Moonpig is in Channel Isles and doesn’t seem effected. It seems to be only UK mail

I also have had cards from there.

Not just parcels, My Bank card went to my Daughter's address in the UK, she sent it to me Registered post at a cost of £6.20, Correos then charged me euros 5.40 to receive it, a piece of plastic in a normal envelope, I call it Licensed Thieving by Correos.
