Evening all, I’m a single chap (witty and handsome) well maybe that’s stretching it…..I have had a dream of one day moving abroad to warmer climates. I have no family in the UK to keep me here but am worried about moving abroad and being totally isolated. Are there any single or once single people that moved across the waters and how they met new people and gained a new social circle ?

Any guidance help or advice appreciated

JB

There are plenty of opportunities to join in with ways to meet new people…weekly coffee morning in Los Alcazares, volunteering for any of the many charities, lots of sporty activities although from HDR you need a car!

Hi James

I think, as with anywhere, if you make an effort then you'll make friends and a social life.

If you purchase on a golf resort (particularly) or an urbanisation, then there will be a small number of bars, restaurants, a gym etc - so that focuses other residents & visitors on those places. Alternatively, if you purchase in a village / town / city/ there will be many more people, but they may be spread out over a much wider selection of those places / activities.

An easy start is chatting to your neighbours - many people (as I'm sure you've found on this forum) are happy to help, chat, share their experiences, etc. If you play a sport - golf, padel, tennis, boules, cycling, various water sports, etc. then most areas will have a club or association with social as well as sports events; and then there are walking groups, book clubs, quiz nights in many areas.

Hope this helps!

Hi James. Im in same situation. Late 50s. Single. Gave up a good Career in Healthcare to look after elderly Mum for 5 years. Shes now in Fulltime Nursing Home Care and I want a new start, preferably in a warm climate. Im sociable and like people so wd like to join a few Clubs/Classes and maybe do some Vol work. Im afraid of being isolated, moving to a new Country not knowing anyone? Hopefully I will get to rent initially to see if I like it. 🤞

Hi Miriam, thanks for your email.

I have had a few replies saying just go for it but I don’t tend to act on the side of caution as this is a massive decision so why not!

Not sure how much research you have done I have only made two trips to Spain and although I haven’t decided what area I am looking at Murcia.

Of course since Brexit things are a lot more complicated, I have no family so my idea was always to sell up and enjoy some sun but like you I’m worried at being isolated with no friends or social life

Hi again James. I have friends in late 60s who have bought  a bit further down the coast near Aquilas and they love it but only use it for about 6/8 weeks at a time, and have another home here in Southern Ireland. Im go out to stay with them in May so hopef I will get a feel for the place. I was in Playa Flamenca also b4 and liked it as great Beaches and Town centre etc but a bit too built up for me to live in permanently. Have also been to Marbella, Torremolinos but dont think wd like to live in either place.

Heres to finding the place of our dreams 🤞🌻

Hi Miriam, so you currently live in Ireland ?

I am in Lancashire England.

For me this will be something I plan to do when retired however I am only 58 so have a few years yet but I do think it will take me that long to find all the information I need to make an informed decision

Yes James I live by the Sea in Co Cork Southern Ireland.

I too think it will take me a year or two to make the move to Spain but it will give me time to hopefully make the right choice 🤞🌻
