Do not rely on what you are told! You can check whatever you need to know by visiting the Government website section - Living in Spain and the Spanish Government website.

The Websites specifically advise what is permitted and are updated when changes occur.

www.gov.uk/ living in Spain

Apologies for my last rather curt reply. I had tried to find the information on the Spanish consulate site but got nowhere with that. I also THOUGHT I'd found the info I needed on gov.uk but what I hadn't noticed was that the advice was for travel outside the UK, not specifically Spain. I guess I assumed it was because the original email referred to Spain, so it was a combination of misplaced trust and wishful thinking! Thanks to Adrian on his Facebook video 'Corona Virus & Spain - information'  all is now clear. When we're through this dreadful period, I think that young man should be awarded for all his efforts.

Hi for those who have been mentioning bills I can clarify a few things. Even though your not in Spain you will still encounter service charges. In terms of electricity this is monthly and the standing charge depends on your set consumption. This is usually set high but if your not using your prop...

...erty you can lower this. The set consumption dictates how much power you need in your place. So if you use only a few electrical appliances for example you could lower this. Simply email your supplier. I can also confirm that your solicitor should have set up these bills do they will have more information. Like the UK you can also access your bills electronically. Now for water. Most companies or communities in Spain will actually include your rubbish/bin collections with your water. These bills are paid quarterly. For the person who has had a bill that they were not expecting it may be due to the previous person. It’s also worth noting that if you have a water leak for example this would result in a larger bill. This is why it’s important for people to be allowed to travel to check out their properties. Good luck everyone. If you need any help with bills etc please just ask.

Not all water bills are paid quarterly, in fact of the many properties I have owned they have all been bi monthly, in Santiago La Ribera the rubbish is not paid on the weer bill but from my IBI.

For information a 2 bed apartment in use 24/7 the water bill is normally about 35 euros  every 2 months.

Ye, i realised the same when I was charged for a card and the monthly charges are higher than UK. But on the plus side...I'm looking forward to the climate, hoping to learn a bit of Spanish and integrate with the locals. Despite some things being more expensive I'm sure it will be worth it.

Gerry,

Have you looked at a TransferWise ( now just called wise) account, you can set up youe derect debits from there with no charges for your debit card, alos get very good transfer rates.

Thanks for the reply. I set up a current account with Bankinter, which a few people had recommended. Maybe when I know more and have moved in I will look at swapping, which is simple in UK but don't know how it works in Spain.

Gerry what about those who want/need to enter and don't want the vaccine?

My father passed away last year in Spain and myself and my children have inherited his home. If they go down the unlawful route of vaccine passports, that essentially leaves us with a property we can never use.

Surely a negative test should be enough?!!  It's frustrating to me as the more people accept this route, the more they'll go ahead with it, despite the European Council advising that it's against our human rights :(

I suggest that you start thinking about the society and fellow human beings and simply vaccine! Because if people like you the situation is getting worst: people who has the Chance to vaccine, and refuse. I call it: a complete seifishness! Go and vaccine, and do all of us a favor...

Have you had water bills like me, I've only owned the property for a month but had a bill for 42 euros. Didn't expect it as the place is empty

Check the period covered by the bill.  Ours (Aqualia) bills every 2 months and there is also the Basura (rubbish collection charge) included in the bill.  So you  might be being billed for 2 months of Standing Charges and 2 months of Basura.

Thanks for that. Not too worried about not being able to visit LA at present. This may need confirming but I've just heard on bbc breakfast that Spain is insisting on the wearing of masks on the beach! The resulting tans will raise a few laughs!

Thank you for this info. I'm realising, quite quickly, that there are payments for everything. 😳 I've recently ordered a debit card from the bank and I'm being charged for that. We live & learn! Thanks & I'm sure we'll get used to how things work in time.

Hi. Open accounts with Wise (was Transferwise) and Starling Bank.  Then you can do all your transfers, have a debit card etc fee free, apart from the atm charge for drawing out cash. Hope this helps.
