Hello,

We are in the process of buying a holiday home in Roda.  We want to set up Spanish bank account in order to pay our utility bills only.  We are being told by our solicitors to open a Revolut account.

We would really like some advise please.

We have a UK account which allows us to make purchases and use ATMs in Spain without any charges so we only need this account to pay our bills.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, your absolute best bet is to open a Wise (formerly Transferwise) account. We pay all our bills using this, including the purchase of the property funds/fees and use a Starling or Monzo debit card for transactions.  It's nigh on impossible to draw cash from any atm without some kind of charge - the Spanish are charged it too.  Hope this helps x

Solicitor is talking nonsense  ..he should organise / recommend / an appropriate bank account...revolut had a lot of fraud issues ..just Google it .....I have used hifx / Xe for 20 years via the BBVA ...before anyone starts saying the BBVA are rubbish I am not saying they are perfect but their online app allows you to turn back payment requests and a whole host of other useful tools ...go for a ' reputable ' bank ..not a recent online non mainstream one would be my counsel and check out their fees of course etc ..

Thank you, we thought the solicitors should be more helpful too. They offered us another account which had € 140 up front charges plus ongoing charges of € 33 per quarter.  We only need the account to pay our utilities, so we thought these charges were excessive.

When we bought in 2004 first on a weekend inspection trip we were absolutely frazzled after a weekend of viewings and finances and advice and making the purchase...just when I had enough the estate agent said look let me talk you through hifx currency broker and I wanted to say no..i was tired but best thing I ever did ..they are now XE ..and the estate agent recommended an independent solicitor who helped us set up a bank account and all the utilities and we have done the same with two further purchases since in both respects ..they set up all the utilities and your direct debit..a good one does anyway ..sort out your wealth tax etc etc...

Thank you.  Do we need our NIE numbers before we set up bank account? Our solicitors are doing that for us, but we haven't heard back from them on this yet.  Only contact we've had so far is to do with the bank account and this seems like the wrong order to us.

Hi, Kaz.  I know the process can seem daunting, questionable and a bit backwards, with ridiculous delays, crazy requests for information etc but that's Spain!  All will be absolutely fine.  We waited by the phone for hours on completion day, then eventually rang our solicitor who informed us the purchase was done hours ago but she forgot to ring us and was out enjoying her lunch!!  Welcome to Spain lol x
