Gerry,

Don't give up it takes time to learn many things.

I don't know your age but as we get older things are harder to pick up and understand, Mags has given some good advice about listening and watching  channel 7 on the tv it gives lots of information about the area also the news.

As Mags said she learned the language in the 80s so maybe we are talking about 30 years ago when she herself would have been much younger with a more agile mind.

Just try and keep at it there are many in your situation, and I do not know why the adverse comment about ordering a beer was posted when you were asking for help.

Indeed I was! I was in my mid 30's and had the advantage of being employed by a Spanish tour operator and nobody in the office really spoke English. So I had to learn!

Any tips on learning Spanish. Someone suggested YouTube Spanish with Paul. I tried that but finding it too difficult, probably because I'm not good at picking up languages. Any suggestions welcome, what worked for you?

I have learnt basic Spanish using DuoLingo..which is free to use and starts with very basic spanish..you can progress as much as you want to..it is however mexican spanish but I don't think much difference..you can download the app on your smart phone or tablet..l am now starting basic greek and that's a huge mountain to climb..Best of luck.

I didn't take it as an adverse comment, not at all, don't think it was meant in a negative way. The comments have all been helpful,I will persevere with learning, slowly!

Hi,

I am learning with Duolingo, it is probably the easiest one to learn with, IMHO.

When you learn a little, practice it in the shops, or if you pass someone just say hello etc It helps build up your confidence.

Also, a little each day will eventually start to stick, small steps.

I also think Spanish classes are are very good. I will eventually be going to a class, when I am able.

Don’t give up 🇪🇸

Kind Regards

Sue

Best way to start learning Spanish is to first understand the alphabet and understanding the phonic sounds in Espanol. A  audiobook starting at basics will help. Start 1st week only learning 5 new words. Continue for a month learning 5 new words per week and use them outside. Speak English in a sentence and just throw in one or two Spanish words. As you go through the weeks, like on the 12 week, learn 7 new words. I have found this the best way to learn. Also when you are in cafe, have your translate google on, and write your order and  listen, learn and repeat to waiter's. Before you know it, 12 months later you will be learning 30 new words per week. Have ago 🌞

Guys, this learning random words approach can hardly lead to fluency. You have to actually understand the structure of the language, not just vocabulary.

I recommend you watch this free video Spoken Spanish - James Spanish School to understand the approach that is needed.

No amount of online learning is a substitute for actually speaking to Spanish people. There are small group classes and conversation intercambio groups around Los Alcazares...doesnt matter how little you know there will be some Spanish learners really keen to practice their English!

Crissy, I agree but you first need to be able to understand what is being said to you and then  construct sentences on the fly...so you can actually carry a conversation.

Yes, definitely Duolingo. I practice everyday in the hope that I may get to use it in Spain. Faint hope at the moment though as Brexit & Covid have put paid to that!

I think the Spanish that you learn on Duolingo is South American but they say that you will be understood in Spain. Best thing is it's free.
