I would be pleased to hear of anyone who has bought a cover for the external aircon unit. I bought from Leroy Merlin last year, supposed to be UV protected but didn't last a year. Any recommendations gratefully received.

The external units are built to be exposed to the elements - why cover them up?

Yes I know that!! If you want to keep them in good condition when the house is unoccupied it's always best to cover them. That stops the Sahara sand; salt and sunlight slowly damaging them.
