Exchange of expired U.K. Driving Licence for Spanish Licence

Has anyone had any difficulty exchanging their U.K. driving licence for a Spanish driving licence if their licence has expired?
I understand the licence should not have been renewed in the U.K. while the negotiations were taking place, if I was a Spanish resident.
Therefore the licence expired just before the agreement was reached.
Has anyone else been in that situation and has it been dealt with as a ‘straight forward’ exchange by the DGT or has anyone had difficulties?
