Most points on this topic have already been covered, but just a couple of additional thoughts:
- the motorway is probably the better option when arriving, but it might be worth considering the N332 when going BACK to Alicante airport:
a) if there's an accident on the m'way that causes a significant hold-up, and you're on a tight schedule, there's unlikely to be an escape route if you're stuck in a queue on the m'way. In other words, to coin a phrase, you could be stuffed. By contrast, if there's a hold-up on the N332, there are any number of potential escape routes, giving you a much better chance of making your (increasingly expensive) flight;
b) for the uninitiated, as the 2 motorways ( A-7 and AP-7) merge near Elche/Elx, there is a short section where the carriageway has 4 lanes. In order to get to the airport, you have to get into the (single) outermost lane. It is signposted, but you don't get long to make this manoeuvre, especially if you're in the inside (slow) lane. The motorway is often busy around there; and you are also likely to encounter "boy-racer" types who want to have uninterrupted access to the "fast" lane, and have the impatience and disposition of a fruit-fly on Red Bull. After a short distance, the airport route then becomes 2 lanes. At this point, you are quite likely to have at least one of the above-mentioned fruit-flies stuck to your rear bumper. Before moving (right) into the slower lane, watch out for the fruit-flies undertaking you - they won't wait for you to ease your way across to the inside lane. This scenario doesn't arise on the way out of the airport because of the way the road system works.
Finally, if you do plan on using the N332, it's worth taking the AP-7 for the short section between San Javier (etc) and Junction 768 as they both run more or less next to each other for this portion of the journey, before the AP-7 heads inland and the tolls start appearing. As well as being a bit quicker, you can avoid about half-a-dozen roundabouts on the N332 - roundabouts proliferate at the Southern end of this journey, but decrease in frequency as you go further North, especially between Torrevieja and the airport.
