Don't worry about him, he  always has a bigoted and/or negative view on everything and anything. I'm sure he does it to get a rise out of people, just block him as many of us have.

The sort of people who will suffer most are those hard workers, like my sister. She has been working her socks off in food retail (long hours, very few days off) as a significant percentage of her colleagues have stayed away from work for months just to "be safe", leaving the store very shor...

She desperately needs a break and now her upcoming week to visit us is being denied her unless she breaks quarantine or gets her boss to allow her the extra time, neither likely to happen.

You may find that if your sister is classed as a Key Worker when she and her family return to England they will be entitled to a free Covid 19 Test and my understanding from reading the Goverment advice on there website if your sisters test results are negative they will not have to self isolate for 14 days, please double check this there is a list of Key Workers on the Goverment Web Site for Covid 19.

Thanks for that Phil,  I'll pass all that over to her.

You are absolutely correct Peter, however the 'PC' brigade may choose to crucify you for saying so. I know of one group of 4 life long sick lame and lazy boasting about going on their annual pilgamage to Benidorm in August.  Not been on a decent holiday for 6 years, I don't recieve any benefits.  My opinion, only the brain dead will travel inter continental during this period of pandemic, 'essential journies only'!!

By taking major decisions to try and protect the majority there will always be people who will try to take advantage or simply abuse. That applies not just to residents of the UK but any country as can be seen by the global varying approaches to the virus

Seems to me no one will get this totally correct and mistakes have been made and will continue to be made. However, so long as governments all try to act in the best interests of their population I cannot see that they can do any more

Some refuse to wear masks and some say they will not be vaccinated. Personally I do not understand that logic but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I think we have to trust those in charge to try and do the right thing for the cast majority

With the UK now having an extremely large testing capacity, wouldn't the most appropriate action have been to shift some of these resources to airports so that every passenger arriving from Spain be tested, with only those found to be positive having to self-isolate beyond the period when their test results were still unknown?

Can you imagine the expense and resources needed to do that?  There's a hell of a lot of countries as well as Spain on UKs red list.

If people keep to 'essential only' travel as advised, risk and spread would be minimal?

I can see both sides of this argument - personally I think the best solution is to look at where the spikes are, invoke the 14 day quarantine rules from these regions - for e.g Catalonia (Barcelona). Holland have instructed their citizens if coming to the UK and visiting Leicester they have to isolate for 10 days - the UK Government could have applied a similar ruling to Spain.

Isolating by region sounds logical but of course you could fly to Alicante,  for example where it is safe, and then journey to Barcelona,  where it is not

Very hard to track and control but that is exactly what some regions in Spain are currently arguing for

Potentially the blanket ban is the safest option for all concerned

I don’t understand why some of these spoilt and selfish people can’t go without their holiday this year. Many pehave gone years without being able to have a holiday, let alone abroad, for one reason or another. Yet they just can’t go without and then moan when their plans have to be changed. Aaaah!
