Sean is absolutely right, all the talk about parity ignores the obvious, Spain as a member of the EU cannot make the change, even if it wanted to, without the agreement of all the other Schengen countries,.
All that the Spanish authorities can do is shut their eyes and they have been known to do that before in other matters..
However, who wants to test that out?, in the days of computerised recording of travel movements, ( from scanned and stamped passports for 3rd country travellers)
Remember one of the overstay penalties that can be applied is banning of future entry.
If you decide to risk it, giving the Guardia any grief would not be recommended, in case they decide to look at every page of your passport.
