Having considered the pros and cons of driving either through France (Eurotunnel), or from Santander (Ferry) to Camposol, it's worth looking into problems people face when hiring cars in Spain.

I have heard and read of rip off car rental companies, overcharging you on petrol, inventing scratches or dents that were no fault of yours just to retain your deposit, does it really worth the hassle of hiring?

Yes on my last visit, I rented a car from Goldcar at Corvera airport. The contract was if the car was returned with a full tank of fuel, I would be refunded the 50 euro's they had billed me, for the full tank when I picked up the car. I returned the car with a full tank which was recorded by the receptionist. I never received my 50 euro refund. I wrote to Goldcar and Do you Spain  they have not had the courtesy to reply to my emails sent in November. When in Camposol I use Bolnuevo Cars absolutely no problems with them.

Goldcar  are a terrible company with a very bad reputation. Centauro are better to deal with.

We went to France on holiday two years ago in our Spanish registered car. Did a fair bit of touring round and returned back home to Spain to find two speeding fines waiting for us. We had only exceeded the limit by less than 5 km/h.

So not  going on holiday to France again.
