If you're a resident the Spanish healthcare is free.

It is only free of of UK pensionable age and have your S1 form.

We cannot recommend ASSSA, with them but leaving soon.

In my case it's Belgian pension and S1 indeed.

I have the tarjeta sanitaria.

The biggest problem here in Spain is that you have to wait a long time for operations etc.

The trick is (if you are really in pain)  : call an ambulance and you'll receive help immediately :-)

Pretty much the same back in England with the NHS, staff generally  brilliant just not enough of them or facilites. if you need to wait a long time for an operation then might as well do it in the sun. Just one of the many reasons we've come to live here full time.

Healthcare isn't automatically free for residents. If you are not working and paying into the system here, and are under UK state retirement age, you need to have alternative healthcare provision. To obtain residency, you have to show that you have that provision. The convenio especial is only applicable once you have been resident for a year, so for most people under state retirement age and not paying into the system, they will need to have private medical insurance to get their residency.

My partner is with DKV, and we have had good experiences there. We went to their centre in Mazarrón (on Avenida Constitución, on the left-hand side as you come from Camposol, between the tobacconist and the petrol station). I speak Spanish, my partner doesn't, but the agent there had enough English for him to understand and organise the insurance. Not all of the medical or admin staff speak any English, but that will usually be the case with any company you go with. It's something of a myth that if you get private cover you can have English-speaking doctors! If you don't speak Spanish, you'll still need a translator. Having said that, if you are sent to see a specialist and can go to Virgen de la Caridad in Cartagena, they do offer a translating service if you ask for it, and it's very good.

In terms of timescales, we have generally been able to see a doctor the same day, unless we've wanted to see a specific one when it could mean waiting a day or two for when they are next on duty. A lot of the doctors (including specialists) in private healthcare also work in the state system and for more than one private company, so they may only work certain timetables with a particular company.

I hope this helps!

We are with Asssa and we have a number to call for and ambulance so if it is on your card ring that number or it will be in your policy. If you call the public ambulance you will probably taken to santa lucia state hospital and charged. I went to urgencies in mazarron and a few days later received a bill for €175.

With asssa we are covered by hospitals in lorca cartegena murcia and recently in valencia

We send the doctors reports to asssa and they then send us authorisation forms with details of which hospital or clinic to go to.

In the UK Spaniards and the likes don't need a private health insurance  ..they get free health care all paid by the British tax payers ...(as instructed by the EU).. maybe this is why the UK NHS is in such a mess ...mabey that's why the majority of the people in the UK voted for the Brexit .

Ridiculous statement, the Spanish system is part funded by the Spanish stats and part through insurance, nothing to do with the EU or Britain. No wonder we have the disaster of Brexit with people posting crap like this. The Spanish system works so well because it doesn't employ thousands of managers, diversity officers and various Woke non-jobs. The NHS is a wasteful disgrace.

Exactly, and this is perfectly correct. Good and accurate response
