Not necessarily 65, only eligible for the S1 once of state pensionable age. For me that is 66 and for my wife 67.

To the OP, if you have your resedencia look into the convenio especial if you have 1 year under your belt, could well be cheaper than private cover, especially if you have exclusions that need to be taken into account.

Have a look at Jim's guides for info.

I have been led to believe once one person gets their S1 and then eligible for free state medical care partner and dependants are also eligible.

We are going to sign up for the convenio especial now our first year of residency is up. I'll have one year at the higher rate before my S1 but that is balanced by my wife being covered for free for 5 years from then until  she is eligble for her S1.

I've done the sums and we will be saving over 8.000€ in that time, based on current figures.

The poster wasn't asking about the UK NHS..you live in Spain now so you should be making comparisons with the Spanish NHS.

In the UK Spaniards and the likes don't need a private health insurance  ..they get free health care all paid by the British tax payers ...(as instructed by the EU).. maybe this is why the UK NHS is in such a mess ...mabey that's why the majority of the people in the UK voted for the Brexit .

For a bit of balance .... few Spaniards retire to the UK. Most Spaniards in the UK are working, paying tax and National Insurance contributions. They pay for their healthcare.

The EU citizens that are working and contributing to the UK system are more that welcome ...in Lester UK they have over 5,000 gypsy  families from Romania and Bulgaria ..I wonder how many of them pay into the British tax system ...no matter what you say ..or how you try to talk up being a member of the EU as being good for the UK ...it will fall on deaf ears as the EU doesn't have a level playing field...I know quite a few that are self employed Brit's and paying in to the Spanish system ..as they cannot get jobs on the cards ..but I don't know of any Brit's getting dole money and free NHS care from the Spanish government.

Let's not wreck the OP's thread about DKV insurance by re-running the Brexit debate.

I only have DKV insurance through the bank account I have with Banco Sabadell.  It is only for dentists. I haven’t used it yet (thank goodness). Unfortunately this means I can’t use the dentist I would prefer as you have to stick to the list DKV give you.🌈🌈

The poster wasn't asking about the over worked UK N.H.S ...they enquired about Spanish private health insurance ..I presume to become Residents ..you only need a private health insurance for the first year then you can go on the Spanish N.H.S system at around €65 per month per person.

If you're a resident the Spanish healthcare is free.
