Trouble is this sort of thing is not widely publicised & people just keep on getting caught out.

It's been well known since UK left the Customs Union.

A friend in Ireland who regularly purchased from a UK company, gardening, plants etc. recently re-ordered a plant, cost €9. Normally postage etc. was about €3. After Brexit the bottom line for the same item was €46!!! including all charges, postage, customs etc. The buyer explained to the company that it was no longer an option to purchase from them and sympathised sincerely with them.  It must be impossible for small businesses to survive under this regime.

I’d suggest to friends they send you gifts via Amazon Spain to avoid these charges.  Unfortunately as a result of Brexit we all have to grin and bear these costs.

Don't buy anything from uk Amazon and discourage all your friends from sending things from uk.  I always look either on amazon.es  or Amazon de (Germany) you may have to pay a small delivery charge from Germany but goods usually arrive in 1 or 2 days, depends on what they  tell you at the time of paying.  Never had any problem so far, nor had to send things back.

Hi Lyn.  I totally agree.  However it is Amazon Spain (ES) that I was referring to, so that additional charges are kept to a minimum.  I would never recommend using Amazon UK to send anything to anyone in Spain.

Do you have to have a separate Amazon account as I buy from Amazon.es

There is a fee for 'clearing customs'; this is to assess whether duty is payable or not. This fee is payable whether any duty is applicable or not.  As far as I'm aware this is charged on anything other than a simple letter.

Other carriers (DHL, FedEx, etc) who may be responsible for customs clearance have different fees for this 'service'...

...

Actually I am being charged €5.50 for every simple letter I receive from the UK. They are admin "customs charges" for doing no work. Just another money milking scheme

My son-in-law sent us a jar of his home-made jam and paid extra in the UK post office to supposedly cover any customs costs but when the parcel finally arrived in Spain about three weeks later, Correos sent us a form to fill in with all the details of the contents of the parcel, plus a whole list...

... of other questions. We filled in the form and gave the value of the parcel as 2€, which would be the cost of a jar of jam, and returned it to Correos. 10 days later, we received a demand via Correos from the Aduana, demanding 58€ to cover the cost of additional postage, taxes, customs duties, and "handling". The "handling" was the largest part of this bill! We declined and told them to send the parcel back from whence it came! It took another 3 weeks for the parcel to be returned to sender but it did arrive eventually. We picked up the pot of jam personally when we went to the UK the following week and advised our family never to post anything to Spain again!

We too avoid having anything sent out from the UK. Even a simple letter draws a €5.50 fee! Ridiculous!

I know.  We had the same problem. We sent over a remote control (no batteries as that only complicated things on Custom's Sheet!) and when that was delivered it was about 18 euros for the recipient to pay!!  Downright robbery.  I don't know whether they're being awkward due to us c...

The same applies to anyone outside of the EU area. Not only the Brits.

No. You just use your same Amazon account. I too sometimes use Amazon.de and there is no problem.
